Chick-fil-A and Popeyes are back in the same conversation this week for a small reason: on November 2 Popeyes returned its Cajun Onion Rings to US menus at $3.99, a side many locations had dropped by the early 2010s.1 The bigger reason is seven years old. Popeyes sold out its first chicken sandwich within weeks of its August 2019 debut, then brought it back on Sunday, November 3, the one day every Chick-fil-A is closed, with an "Open Sunday" sign beside a Chick-fil-A billboard.2
The two chains have been compared ever since: Chick-fil-A from a 1946 diner outside Atlanta, Popeyes from a 1972 counter near New Orleans. Fourteen rankings below hold at least one of them, and eleven hold both.
Chick-fil-A's case is everything that happens at the counter, Popeyes' case is what comes out of the fryer, and most of these fourteen lists make you pick one.
Chick-fil-A vs In-N-Out: the best fast food chain in America
The widest question comes first. This ranking puts 26 chains in one field, including McDonald's, Starbucks, Culver's and Jersey Mike's, and both Chick-fil-A and Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen are on it.
Chick-fil-A brings the numbers. A franchise disclosure reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution put its 2025 US sales at nearly $24 billion from 3,287 restaurants, which makes it the third-largest fast-food chain by sales behind McDonald's and Starbucks. A freestanding Chick-fil-A averaged almost $9.2 million.3
In-N-Out has a different claim: a short menu that rarely changes and a cult following no sales table measures.
Popeyes is the outsider here. It is a chicken specialist in a field of burger and coffee giants.
Popeyes vs Chick-fil-A: the best fried chicken chain
Narrow the field to chicken and the matchup gets serious. Fifteen chains are here, including KFC, Raising Cane's, Bojangles, Church's Texas Chicken and Jollibee.
Popeyes was built for this list. Al Copeland founded it in New Orleans in 1972, and when Restaurant Brands International agreed to buy it in 2017 for about $1.8 billion, the pitch was that Louisiana recipe.4 Bone-in, spicy, marinated chicken is the core of the menu.
Chick-fil-A barely sells bone-in chicken at all. Its case rests on the boneless breast, fried in peanut oil, served by a chain much larger than any rival on the list.
KFC has the history both lack, and Jollibee brings the Filipino version of the same craving.
The 2019 chicken sandwich war: Chick-fil-A Original vs Popeyes
The rivalry takes its name from this list. Fifteen fast-food chicken sandwiches compete, and Chick-fil-A has two of them, the Original and the Spicy Deluxe, against the Popeyes Chicken Sandwich, the McDonald's McCrispy and Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich.
Chick-fil-A got there first by half a century. Truett Cathy developed the recipe in 1964, at the Hapeville, Georgia, restaurant he had opened in 1946.5
Popeyes arrived in August 2019 and changed its own company's results. In the fourth quarter of 2019, Restaurant Brands International reported Popeyes system-wide sales up 42.3% and US comparable sales up 37.9%, and its chief executive called the sandwich "a game changer for the brand in every way."6
Fans of the Original answer that the 2019 sandwich arrived 55 years after the recipe it was compared with, and that going viral is a different thing from being better.
Chick-n-Strips vs Raising Cane's: the best fast food chicken tender
Strip away the bun and the sandwich war becomes a tender war. Fourteen chains compete, from KFC, Wendy's and Dairy Queen to Zaxby's, Slim Chickens, Huey Magoo's and Dave's Hot Chicken, and both Chick-fil-A and Popeyes put their strips in the field.
Chick-fil-A's Chick-n-Strips are the same boneless breast as the sandwich, breaded by hand in each restaurant and cooked in peanut oil. Popeyes answers with Classic Tenders marinated in Louisiana seasoning, sold in spicy and, at some locations, blackened versions.
Raising Cane's complicates the list for both. The Baton Rouge chain sells chicken fingers and almost nothing else, so its whole reputation rides on the item the other two treat as a side order.
Popeyes Cajun fries vs McDonald's: the best French fries
Fries are where the chicken chains meet the burger giants on equal terms. The 15 options include McDonald's, In-N-Out, Five Guys, Arby's curly fries and Checkers, along with Chick-fil-A and Popeyes.
Popeyes seasons its fries with Cajun spice, a direct line back to its Louisiana menu. Chick-fil-A cuts waffle fries, a shape that holds sauce better than any straight fry.
McDonald's is the name both chicken chains have to get past. Its thin, salted fry is the default answer for most of America and the benchmark every other fry here gets measured against.
Popeyes vs Chick-fil-A mac and cheese
Popeyes vs Chick-fil-A is a mac and cheese dispute as much as a chicken one. This ranking puts the two sides next to six other chicken chains: Church's, Bojangles, KFC, Slim Chickens, Dave's Hot Chicken and Boston Market.
Chick-fil-A added its version on August 12, 2019, the same Monday Popeyes launched the sandwich. It was the chain's first permanent new side since 2016, and it is baked in each restaurant with Parmesan, Cheddar and Romano.7
Popeyes calls its version Homestyle: butter and cheddar, baked, then covered with more shredded cheddar. The crust on top is the point.
KFC's softer, saucier cup is the one most Americans grew up with, and it is the other side of the baked-or-creamy split this list comes down to.
Chick-fil-A Sauce vs Popeyes Blackened Ranch
Nine sauces make this list, and the Chick-fil-A Sauce is the one with an origin story. The honey mustard, barbecue and ranch blend started as one franchise operator's experiment, and it now sells in bottles at grocery stores.
Popeyes answered with Blackened Ranch, a buttermilk ranch with blackened seasoning that has since followed the Chick-fil-A Sauce into grocery stores.
Chick-fil-A also has Polynesian on the list, so the chain enters with two sauces to Popeyes' one. Cane's Sauce is the strongest outsider, the one condiment here that a whole chain's identity rests on.
Popeyes vs Chick-fil-A: the best fast food lemonade
Eleven chains that really sell lemonade are on this list, including McDonald's, Raising Cane's and Hot Dog on a Stick, which stomps its lemonade by hand in front of customers.
Chick-fil-A treats lemonade as a signature item: lemon juice, cane sugar and water, plus a Frosted Lemonade blended with its soft-serve.
Popeyes keeps chasing it. On August 31 the chain launched Pineapple Lemonade, Frozen Pineapple Lemonade and Pineapple Iced Tea, a lineup Allrecipes framed as Popeyes "coming for Chick-fil-A."8
Chick-fil-A vs Popeyes at the drive-thru
Fourteen chains compete on the drive-thru, and coffee shares the field with chicken: Starbucks, Dunkin' and Dutch Bros sit next to Raising Cane's, Whataburger and both of this article's chains.
Chick-fil-A turned its drive-thru into a system. Staff walk the line with tablets, double lanes run side by side, and the cars still move on rainy days.
Popeyes has the harder story. The 2019 sandwich launch sent lines around the block and into the news, and a drive-thru that becomes a headline rarely becomes a model.
The Popeyes answer is the calendar. A Chick-fil-A drive-thru is closed one day in seven, a rule Truett Cathy set in 1946.9
ACSI 2026: Chick-fil-A vs Popeyes on customer service
The gap between the two chains is widest here, and an outside scoreboard measures it. Eighteen chains are here, and the American Customer Satisfaction Index scored most of them in its 2026 restaurant study.
Chick-fil-A held 83 out of 100, unchanged from a year earlier. The score no longer leads the category: newcomer Jersey Mike's debuted at 84 and ended Chick-fil-A's run at the top among quick-service chains, which had lasted more than a decade.
Popeyes fell 3% to 73, the same study reported, while KFC rose 4% to 80 and became the nearest chicken rival to Chick-fil-A.10
The Popeyes counter-argument is that ACSI measures satisfaction, not appetite, and the sandwich lines of 2019 were made of people who expected to wait.
Popeyes vs Whataburger: the best fast food chain born in the South
Nineteen chains founded in the American South compete here, and the field shows how much of fast food came from the region: Burger King from Jacksonville, KFC from Corbin, Kentucky, Sonic from Oklahoma, Hardee's from Greenville, North Carolina.
Chick-fil-A's Southern roots run through Hapeville, Georgia, where Truett Cathy and his brother Ben opened the Dwarf Grill with ten stools and four booths.5 Popeyes is Louisiana in its name, its spice and its red beans and rice.
Whataburger is the third name that complicates the matchup. It was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, and Texans defend it as fiercely as Georgians defend Chick-fil-A.
Chick-fil-A vs Starbucks: the most overrated restaurant chain
Fame counts against a chain on this list. Sixteen restaurant brands are nominated, among them Starbucks, Chipotle, Olive Garden, Cheesecake Factory and In-N-Out, and Chick-fil-A is on it.
Popeyes is not. A chain has to be widely loved before anyone can call it overrated, and Chick-fil-A's sales per restaurant invite exactly that charge: the skeptic's case is that the service is better than the field and the sandwich is a pickle and a chicken breast.
Starbucks is the natural opponent. It is the other chain on this list that people line up for daily and complain about while they wait.
Chick-fil-A Nuggets vs Waffle Potato Fries
Chick-fil-A gets a ranking of its own menu, and Popeyes has no place in it. Fourteen items compete, from the original Chicken Sandwich and the Spicy Deluxe to Chick-n-Minis, Chicken Noodle Soup and the Frosted Lemonade.
The nuggets and the waffle fries are the two items most often ordered together, which makes the pairing a real dilemma rather than a formality. Chick-fil-A Sauce is on the list as a menu item in its own right.
Popeyes Red Beans and Rice vs Cajun Onion Rings
Popeyes gets the same treatment, and Chick-fil-A has nothing to enter. The 15 Popeyes items include the Chicken Sandwich, Classic and Spicy Signature Chicken, Cajun Fries and Mashed Potatoes with Cajun Gravy.
The sides are what separate this menu from Chick-fil-A's. Red Beans and Rice and Cajun Rice come straight from New Orleans home cooking, and the Cajun Onion Rings made the list before this month's return to menus nationwide.
Peanut oil or Cajun spice
Chick-fil-A is a service company that happens to fry chicken, and Popeyes is a Louisiana kitchen that happens to have a drive-thru, so each one looks strongest on the lists built around its own habit. The fourteen rankings above are settled the same way any ranking here is, two options per screen until an order emerges.
