A head-to-head ranking turns a simple question into a game. Instead of asking people to score items one by one, you show them two options at a time and let them pick a winner. Match after match, the votes add up into a ranking that reflects what the crowd actually prefers.
This guide walks you through creating your first head-to-head ranking on YouPickBest — from the question you ask to the moment people start voting — with screenshots of every step.
What is a head-to-head ranking?
Every ranking is built from two things:
- A question — the topic people are voting on, such as "Best pizza topping" or "Who is the favorite Disney princess?".
- A set of options — the contenders that get compared against each other.
When someone plays your ranking, they don't rate every option in isolation. They see a matchup: two options side by side. They pick the one they like more, and the next matchup appears. Those individual choices are combined into a single ranked list.
Why does this work so well? Choosing between two things is effortless — ranking twenty things from scratch is not. Head-to-head voting breaks an overwhelming decision into a series of tiny, fun ones, which is exactly why people keep voting.
Step 1: Start a new ranking
Head to the Create page from the menu, or go straight to /ranking/create. You don't need an account to start — you can build your entire ranking as a guest and sign in only when you're ready to publish.
You'll be asked a single question: what do you want people to vote on? You can type your own topic or pick one of the trending suggestions below the box.
Step 2: Write a clear question
Your question is the headline of the ranking, so make it specific and inviting:
- Be concrete. "Best Italian dishes" gives voters a clear frame; "Best food" is too broad to be fun.
- Keep it short. A question people can read at a glance gets more votes.
- Make it opinionated. Topics people feel something about — favorite movies, hottest takes, all-time greats — drive the most engagement.
Step 3: Add your options
Options are the contenders. You have two ways to add them, and you can mix both:
- Generate suggestions. As soon as you set a question, YouPickBest proposes relevant options — complete with images — that you can add with a single click. Keep the ones you like and skip the rest.
- Add them yourself. Use Add option to type in your own contenders, write a short description, and attach an image.
Aim for a healthy number of options — enough to make the matchups interesting, but all genuinely belonging to the topic.
Tip: Every option should be a fair contender for the question. Mixing in items that obviously don't belong makes the matchups less meaningful — and less fun to vote on.
Step 4: Preview and publish
Before going live, the Preview & Publish step shows you how your ranking will look. Here you can:
- Review the auto-generated description that appears beneath your ranking.
- Choose a cover — a single image or a collage built from your options.
- Upload or paste your own cover image if you'd prefer.
If you started as a guest, you'll be asked to sign in at this point. Nothing is lost — your draft is saved, and once you're signed in it's published and ready to share.
Step 5: Share it and watch the ranking form
Once published, anyone can play your ranking. Voting is always head-to-head: two options, one pick.
There are two ways people can vote:
| Mode | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Tournament | Options face off in a bracket, round by round, until a winner emerges. | A clear, decisive champion. |
| Quick Vote | A fast stream of random matchups. | Casting lots of votes quickly. |
As votes come in, the results page updates to show how every option ranks against the rest — scores, order, and all.
Share the link anywhere — the more people who play, the sharper and more interesting the ranking becomes.
Tips for a ranking people love to play
- Pick a topic people care about. Strong opinions mean more votes.
- Give every option a fair shot. A balanced field makes each matchup count.
- Use images wherever you can. Visual matchups are more fun and faster to vote on.
- Share it widely. A head-to-head ranking is only as good as the crowd behind it.
