What Is an Ideal Type World Cup? Korea's Bracket for Picking a Favourite

An ideal type world cup (이상형 월드컵) is a Korean game for picking a favourite: a player sees two candidates at a time, keeps one, and the kept candidates meet again in later rounds until a single winner is left. It is a knockout bracket run by one person's taste. The first candidates were celebrities, and the name borrows the rounds of a football World Cup.

The game began as a segment on a KBS variety show in January 2009. Within a year it had its own Chuseok special, a fan-made Flash version and a follow-up show, and it later spread to brand campaigns, classrooms and election commentary.

What 이상형 and the "world cup" rounds mean

이상형 (理想型) is the ordinary Korean word for the type of person someone considers perfect; the Korean Basic Dictionary translates it as "ideal type".¹ Korean celebrities are asked about their ideal type so often that "X's ideal type is Y" is a standard entertainment headline, and the game turns that question into a bracket.

The rounds carry football names. A field of 32 is the 32강, then come the 16강, the 8강 and the 4강, and the last match is the 결승, the final. The Standard Korean Dictionary defines 강 (強) as "the strong ones within a set range", so 16강 means "the last sixteen".² A 2009 Sports Chosun report described the game as one-on-one matchups "like World Cup football".³

Fields of 16, 32 and 64 are powers of two, so every round halves the field without leftovers. Bigger ones exist: a 2024 Financial News report described a film show whose bracket covered 128 films.⁴

A KBS corner that started with bad reviews

The earliest broadcast on record aired on 31 January 2009 on KBS 2TV's Shin Dong-yup and Shin Bong-sun's Champagne. In an announcers' special, Kim Kyung-ran pressed a button for one of two male stars at a time, from the round of 32 to the final. MyDaily's review the next day quoted viewers who called it "10 minutes of pressing buttons", and some said it copied a segment of the Japanese show London Hearts.⁵

The corner survived. By the end of May it had outside guests: singer Jo Sung-mo picked actress Han Ga-in as his final ideal type.⁶ In November Starnews called it a popular corner and counted actress Son Ye-jin as the winner of three separate brackets, chosen by three different guests.⁷ Comedian Boom ran the segment; in 2026 host Shin Dong-yup still credited his ad-libs for its success.⁸

The peak came at Chuseok, the autumn harvest holiday. KBS gave singer Lee Seung-gi a whole special, "Lee Seung-gi's Ideal Type World Cup", which aired on 4 October 2009 and drew 15.6% of households nationwide according to TNS Media Research, against 15.8% for MBC's show in the same slot. Lee picked YoonA of Girls' Generation.⁹

KBS cancelled Champagne at the end of 2009 but kept the corner. Its replacement, Sweet Night, built a show around the 32-candidate bracket; viewers called it Champagne under a new name.¹⁰ It ended after 13 episodes in May 2010.¹¹

From a Flash file to apps and websites

The internet version started as a learning exercise. On 17 August 2009 a blogger known as sulphur posted a Flash game called "2009 Girl Group Ideal Type Tournament", modelled on the TV corner, with 50 girl-group members and a hard mode that showed only eyes, noses or mouths. A boy-group version with 64 candidates followed three days later, and in October the file spread through DC Inside and other forums.³

Phones took the format abroad. In 2011 the Korean company Danal said its app Face World Match, an ideal type world cup built from ordinary users' photos, had 2 million users in 90 countries within seven months of its launch.¹² Dedicated websites followed, and their results sometimes make the news: a 2025 Nongmin Shinmun story reported a seafood world cup won by snow crab.¹³

Idols, volleyball and a heart operation

Korean television made the bracket a stock game. On SBS's Running Man in 2014, Soyou of SISTAR picked Kim Jong-kook over members of EXO and SHINee.¹⁴ In 2018 Drew Barrymore played a bracket of Korean actors on MBC's Section TV and chose Daniel Henney.¹⁵ Volleyball fans vote in one at the V-League All-Star Game, and a history teacher described in Hankyoreh in 2016 runs a historical figures world cup to get pupils interested in history.¹⁶

Charity found a use for it. The Korea Heart Foundation ran fan-voted celebrity world cups and paid for a 15-year-old heart patient's surgery in the name of the men's winner, BTS's Jin, Dong-A Ilbo reported in 2020.¹⁷ Jin's group has a best BTS song ranking, and BTS face the other big names of the genre in the best K-pop group ranking.

The name reached politics as a metaphor. In 2017 the news site Pressian ran a column headlined "The presidential election is not an ideal type world cup", arguing that an election should weigh ability.¹⁸

The criticism: ranking people by looks

A game that ranks faces draws complaints. In 2022 basketball player Park Kyung-sang posted a women's volleyball players world cup on YouTube and was criticised for it; Hankook Ilbo quoted netizens calling it "really rude".¹⁹ A year earlier, an AfreecaTV streamer faced child-abuse accusations after having his young daughter choose between photos of female streamers.

Brackets of food, films or places avoid that complaint. The 2009 corner ranked only people, and food brackets came later.

Outside Korea

K-pop media carried the format abroad under its Korean name. In 2014 Soompi ran its own "Ideal Type World Cup" with 48 men and 48 women, a group stage and a knockout from the last 16; Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye won.²⁰ In Japan the dating app WIPPY added a 16-candidate "理想のタイプワールドカップ" in 2024, describing it as a game often seen on Korean social media and variety shows.²¹

The same bracket on YouPickBest
