Taylor Swift released The Life of a Showgirl on October 3, 2025, and it moved 4.002 million equivalent units in its first week, beating the record Adele's 25 had held since 2015.1 An Encore edition followed in late September 2026, and on the album's first birthday she walked into Dakota Johnson's monologue on Saturday Night Live.2

Twenty years of records put her on lists that rarely share a name. Teen pop, country crossover, Grammy winners, concert tours, breakup songs, pop feuds and Pennsylvania musicians all claim her. We collected 15 of those rankings.

Every genre Taylor Swift left still files her: country lists count her as a crossover, pop lists measure her against Madonna, and songwriter lists put her next to Bob Dylan.

Taylor Swift vs Madonna: the greatest female pop stars

Of all the lists here, the 14 greatest female pop stars asks the widest question. Madonna, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and Janet Jackson share the list with Swift, and almost every one of them could carry it.

Swift's case is the chart record. The Life of a Showgirl was her 15th number-one album on the Billboard 200, the most for any solo artist, and only the Beatles have more.1

Madonna's case is influence. In the 1980s she set the terms for how a pop star uses image, video and reinvention, and every later name on this list has worked within them.

Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Taylor Swift: the greatest pop songwriters

This article's title comes from one ranking, the 22 greatest pop songwriters. Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Stevie Wonder and Prince fill the top of the field, and so do people who wrote mostly for others, such as Max Martin and Diane Warren.

Swift has the institutional case. She is the only artist with four Grammys for Album of the Year, and in 2026 the Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted her alongside Alanis Morissette, Kenny Loggins and Kiss's Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley.34

She ranks writing above the trophies herself. Accepting the fourth award in 2024, she told the room she feels "this happy when I finished a song".3

Dylan's case needs no trophy count. He has a Nobel Prize in Literature, and the 1960s songs that won it are still the yardstick for every name on the list.

Folklore vs Red: her own albums

Swift's own catalogue is the narrowest ranking here: 11 studio albums, from the 2006 debut to The Tortured Poets Department. Every option on it is hers, so no other artist can take it.

Folklore is the album critics reach for. She made it in 2020 during lockdown, writing with Aaron Dessner of the National over file transfers, and it swapped stadium pop for quiet indie folk.

Red is the fan's answer. The 2012 album mixes banjo country with dubstep-flavoured pop, and it carries the original All Too Well, the song that comes back in a later section.

Grammy Album of the Year: four wins, four eras

The Grammy's top prize has gone to Sgt. Pepper's, Rumours, Thriller, Tapestry and The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. The 24 best Album of the Year winners asks which of them deserved it most.

Four of the 24 are Swift's: Fearless, 1989, Folklore and Midnights. Before the 2024 ceremony she shared the record of three wins with Frank Sinatra, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.3

The Recording Academy rewarded her across three genres. Fearless is country pop, 1989 synth-pop, Folklore indie folk.

Fleetwood Mac's Rumours is the hardest opponent for any of them. It is the breakup record that most later breakup records are compared with.

1989 and Back to Black: the best pop albums by women

The best pop album by a female solo artist sets 1989 against Like a Prayer, Lemonade, Hounds of Love and Rhythm Nation 1814.

Announcing 1989 in August 2014, Swift called it "my very first documented, official pop album".5

Amy Winehouse's Back to Black faces it in this frame, a 2006 record built on 1960s girl-group soul.

The streaming era's classic pop: Midnights vs Future Nostalgia

The best classic pop album of the streaming era is a list of records that may still be played in 30 years: 21, Lemonade, Future Nostalgia, Melodrama, SOUR and Harry's House.

Swift has three entries, 1989, Folklore and Midnights. Midnights, released in October 2022, is the newest of them and the one that brought her back to synth-pop after two folk records.

Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia is the frame's opponent. It came out in March 2020, in the first weeks of lockdown, and it became the disco album of that year.

Fearless vs ...Baby One More Time: teen pop albums

The best teen pop album of all time collects records made by teenagers or for them: ...Baby One More Time, Millennium, No Strings Attached, Hangin' Tough, My World 2.0, Up All Night and SOUR.

Swift has three entries, more than anyone else on it: the 2006 debut, Fearless and Speak Now. She was 16 when the first came out and wrote or co-wrote every song.

Britney Spears was 17 when ...Baby One More Time defined the genre in 1999. Fearless arrived a decade later and won Album of the Year, which no other album here has done.

Taylor Swift vs Shania Twain: the road out of Nashville

Nashville has lost stars to pop radio since the 1960s. The best country-to-pop crossover artist ranks Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Glen Campbell, Faith Hill, LeAnn Rimes, Kacey Musgraves and Lil Nas X.

Swift made the move in the open. She signed a songwriting deal in Nashville at 14, made four albums for country radio, and in 2014 announced the fifth as pop.

Shania Twain did it inside one record. Come On Over shipped in country and pop mixes, and Guinness World Records counts an estimated 40 million copies sold, the most for any studio album by a female solo artist.6

Twain built a crossover. Swift left Nashville for good.

The Eras Tour vs U2 360°: the greatest concert tours

The greatest concert tours of all time mixes box-office records with tours remembered for one image: Madonna's cone bra on the Blond Ambition Tour, Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue, the Beatles' last shows in 1966.

The Eras Tour has the record that ends money arguments. Guinness World Records counts $2,077,618,725 from 149 shows between March 2023 and December 2024, the first tour to pass a billion dollars.7

U2's 360° Tour held the gross record before Ed Sheeran's ÷ Tour took it. Its four-legged stage, nicknamed the Claw, put the band in the middle of the stadium.

Fans of the older tours have a different measure: what the shows changed. Zoo TV turned a rock concert into a TV satire, and the Rolling Thunder Revue played small halls with a travelling cast.

Stop Making Sense and the Eras Tour film

Top 15 concert movies starts from Stop Making Sense, The Last Waltz, Woodstock and Gimme Shelter, films critics have studied for decades. Box office matters less here than anywhere else in this article.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour opened in cinemas on October 13, 2023. Guinness World Records lists it as the highest-grossing concert film at $246,365,022 worldwide.8

Jonathan Demme's Stop Making Sense has the opposite claim. The 1984 Talking Heads film had a small budget and a set that grows one musician at a time, and directors still copy it.

All Too Well: the breakup song that ran ten minutes

The 19 breakup songs in this ranking include Someone Like You, Go Your Own Way, I Will Always Love You, Since U Been Gone, Back to Black and Love Will Tear Us Apart.

All Too Well started as a five-minute track on Red in 2012. Swift's ten-minute re-recording topped the Billboard Hot 100 dated November 27, 2021, and at 10 minutes 13 seconds it replaced Don McLean's American Pie as the longest number-one song.9

Nothing Compares 2 U is the opponent in this frame. Prince wrote it, and Sinéad O'Connor's 1990 version topped charts around the world.

Blank Space vs Love Story: her music videos

The best Taylor Swift music video of all time is a 14-option list, and two Swifts meet in this frame.

Love Story, from 2008, is the fairy tale. She plays a Romeo and Juliet heroine in a ball gown, which was the country-era image.

Blank Space, from 2014, sends that image up. She plays a jealous socialite who wrecks a mansion and a sports car, the version of herself the tabloids were writing about.

All Too Well: The Short Film, which she directed, gives the list a third Swift.

Kanye West, Katy Perry and pop's biggest feuds

The biggest feud in pop music history is the least flattering list in this article. Swift is on it twice: against Kanye West and against Katy Perry.

The West feud began at the 2009 VMAs, when he took the microphone from her during her acceptance speech for Best Female Video. It flared again in 2016 over a lyric in his song Famous. Her dispute with Perry, over backing dancers, produced Bad Blood and ended in a public truce in 2019.

The frame sets Swift and West against Drake and Kendrick Lamar, whose 2024 exchange of diss tracks ended with Not Like Us. Liam and Noel Gallagher split Oasis over theirs.

Shake It Off vs Happy: songs that will not leave the radio

The most overplayed pop song of all time is an inverted list. A song makes it by being everywhere for too long: Happy, Uptown Funk, Despacito, Shape of You, Call Me Maybe, Macarena and Mariah Carey's Christmas hit.

Shake It Off was the first single from 1989 and entered the Hot 100 at the top in 2014. It became a staple of wedding playlists, ads and gym speakers.

Pharrell's Happy has the same problem. It spent ten weeks at number one, then stayed in shops and on classroom speakers for years.

Taylor Swift and Hall & Oates: Pennsylvania's greatest musicians

The 18 greatest musicians from Pennsylvania is the ranking that starts before her career does. Swift was born in West Reading in 1989 and grew up on a Christmas tree farm in Berks County.

The state's list is mostly Philadelphia and Pittsburgh: John Coltrane, Patti LaBelle, Boyz II Men, Teddy Pendergrass, Jim Croce, Pink, Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller.

Hall & Oates are her opponent here, the duo from the Philadelphia suburbs behind Rich Girl and Maneater. Her family left for Hendersonville, Tennessee, when she was 14, and her first single, Tim McGraw, came out two years later.

Fifteen lists, three genres

Swift's rankings fall into three groups. Country lists count her first albums, pop lists count the records that followed, and the songwriter list counts everything she has written. The least flattering list, pop's biggest feuds, is the only one built from her public life.

All 15 orders come from single matchups, two options at a time; how head-to-head ranking works explains the method.

If you have a list she belongs on and we missed, build it and send her through it.
