Dwayne Johnson began 2026 as a first-time Golden Globe nominee, up for Best Actor in a Drama as the wrecked mixed-martial-arts champion Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine.¹ Six months later he was Maui in the flesh, in Disney's live-action Moana, which has taken $261 million worldwide since it reached cinemas on 10 July.²

Both of those men are in the twelve rankings below, alongside the wrestler, the Fast & Furious lawman and the celebrity you would want in the next seat on a long flight.

Wrestling, Disney and A24 each own a piece of Dwayne Johnson, and none of the three is judging the same performer.

WWE's greatest ever: Johnson against Austin, Hogan and The Undertaker

This one asks who the greatest professional wrestler in WWE history is, and Dwayne Johnson's case begins before his first match. WWE's own profile calls him the first third-generation Superstar the company ever had, a grandson and a son of the business who debuted at the 1996 Survivor Series.³

Johnson held the Intercontinental Championship within months of stepping into a ring, and by 1999 the Attitude Era was running on his catchphrases and his eyebrow.

Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin and The Undertaker make this a difficult room to win. Hogan, who died on 24 July 2025 at the age of 71,⁴ sold WWE to families in the 1980s; Austin sold the tickets a decade later; The Undertaker kept one character alive for thirty years.

Longevity is where Johnson's case thins out. He stopped wrestling full-time while the other three kept going, and his returns since have been counted in matches rather than in years.

Dwayne Johnson vs Arnold Schwarzenegger: the athlete-to-actor blueprint

The question here is which athlete became the best actor, and Johnson's sporting half is documented. Miami's official 1991-92 football roster lists him at No. 94, a 6-foot-5, 274-pound defensive tackle out of Freedom High School in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.⁵

No NFL team called. Wrestling took him instead, and the film offers arrived through wrestling rather than through sport.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is the name that complicates the whole exercise. He won Mr. Olympia seven times, then carried The Terminator and two terms as governor of California, which is a longer journey than any wrestler has made.

This ranking sets twenty Dwayne Johnson films against each other, the only list here where every option is his own work.

The commercial peak is a Sony adventure comedy. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle took $36.2 million in its first North American weekend in December 2017 and was made for $90 million.⁶

The other end is a boxing-gym drama. A24 released The Smashing Machine on 3 October 2025 against a $50 million budget, and it finished with $20.4 million worldwide.⁷

The Smashing Machine is also the reason this list is worth a second pass. Benny Safdie won the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the Venice film festival for it,⁸ so the least profitable film Johnson has ever led is the one carrying a festival prize and the performance most critics call his best.

Luke Hobbs vs Dominic Toretto: who actually carries Fast & Furious

Johnson enters this one as Luke Hobbs, the federal agent introduced in Fast Five in 2011 to hunt Dominic Toretto's crew.

Hobbs is the only member of that cast to be handed a film of his own. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw took $760.7 million worldwide in 2019 on a $200 million budget.⁹

Dominic Toretto is the reason the other ten films exist. Vin Diesel has played him since 2001, and every speech about family belongs to him.

WWE Championship: eight reigns for The Rock, a record seventeen for John Cena

Charisma counts for nothing here. This ranking measures decoration, and it is the hardest room Johnson walks into.

WWE credits Johnson with eight WWE Championships and two WCW Championship reigns, the last of them taken from CM Punk in 2013.³

John Cena owns the record in this room. He beat Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41 in April 2025 for a seventeenth world title, more than anyone in the company's history,¹⁰ and Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan are in the same conversation for the same reason.

WrestleMania X-Seven: Austin against The Rock in the Houston Astrodome

The ranking wants the greatest WrestleMania match ever staged, and Johnson's entry is the main event of 1 April 2001.

WWE's own results page for the night records it as a No Disqualification match for the WWE Championship at the Reliant Astrodome, won by Stone Cold Steve Austin after Mr. McMahon handed him a steel chair.¹¹ Johnson lost the title and half the crowd went home unhappy.

The Undertaker's win over Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 25 is what stops most conversations of this kind, and there was no championship on that one at all.

The objection to Johnson's match is its ending. Austin shaking hands with McMahon is still the most picked-over finish in the company's history, and a match that needs a heel turn to end is a strange candidate for greatest ever.

Moana in the Disney canon: Maui against Snow White and Simba

Best Disney animated film of all time is the question, and Johnson is on the list as Maui, the tattooed demigod with the fish hook and the enormous opinion of himself.

Johnson's contribution goes past the dialogue. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote Maui a song, "You're Welcome", and Johnson sings it himself.

Moana also has the strongest afterlife of any recent Disney animation: a sequel in 2024 and a live-action remake in cinemas now, both with Johnson in them.

The objection is casting arithmetic. Maui is the second lead in a film named after somebody else, which is an awkward way to enter a competition that starts with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs in 1937.

Two films, one board game, and Johnson is in the newer one as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, the muscle-bound avatar of a nervous teenager.

The reboot is the commercial answer. Welcome to the Jungle finished with $962.5 million worldwide,⁶ which is more than three times what the 1995 film managed, and it turned a dormant title into a running series.

The 1995 original has Robin Williams and it has everybody's childhood, which no box-office total can overrule. Nostalgia decides most two-film franchise questions, and Johnson's reboot has none to spend.

Johnson spent the late 2000s making films for children: The Game Plan, Race to Witch Mountain, Tooth Fairy. None of them is why he appears on a best-kids'-comedy ranking. Black Adam: the $393 million reason DC moved on

Johnson spent more than a decade campaigning to play Black Adam, which makes his entry on a best-DC-film ranking the one he picked for himself.

Black Adam opened in October 2022 promising to change the hierarchy of power in the DC universe. It closed with $393.5 million worldwide for Warner Bros.,¹² a figure that does not cover a tentpole of that size once marketing is counted.

What happened next was structural. Warner Bros. handed DC Studios to James Gunn and Peter Safran, the new slate started from scratch, and Johnson's character was not part of it.

There is a case for the film, and it is not a box-office case. Black Adam gave the Justice Society its only screen outing, with Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, which is more than most entries on a list dominated by The Dark Knight and Joker can claim.
