How Many Ways Can You Rank Ferran Torres?

Ferran Torres came on in the second half of normal time in New York on 19 July 2026, and at 106 minutes he turned in Nico Williams's headed lay-off to win Spain the World Cup.¹ It was his only goal of the tournament. Thirteen days earlier his pass had set up Mikel Merino's winner against Portugal in the last 16, which is the shape of his career in miniature: decisive in short bursts, doubted in the gaps between them.² The thirteen rankings below all include him and cannot agree what they are looking at.

The goal itself was unglamorous. Nico Williams headed a cross back across the six-yard area and Torres finished with his left foot from close range.³ Zinedine Zidane's two headers in the 1998 final were better football by any technical reading.

Iniesta and Torres: Spain's two World Cups, both won by one goal

The entry requirement here is unusually strict. You have to score the only goal of a World Cup final that finished 1-0, and Ferran Torres met it on 19 July 2026.

Andrés Iniesta is the name Spanish supporters reach for first. He scored the game's only goal against the Netherlands in 2010, was voted the final's best player, and gave Spain the first World Cup the country had ever won.⁴

Barcelona bought a great many attackers in the 2020s and this ranking sorts fourteen of them. Torres arrived from Manchester City in December 2021 on a contract running to 30 June 2027.⁶

The number that fixes his place here is a strange one. In April 2026 he scored twice against Espanyol to reach 62 goals in 201 competitive matches for Barcelona, which took him past Johan Cruyff's 60 on the club's all-time scoring list.⁷

Cruyff needed 180 games for his 60 and rebuilt how the club thinks about football, so the comparison says very little about quality. A scoring list ranks totals and ignores influence, which is how Torres came to stand inside Barcelona's top fifty scorers in a history that began in 1899.

Robert Lewandowski makes the comparison harder. He has 118 Barcelona goals, and among the current squad only he and Raphinha, on 73, have scored more for the club than Torres has.⁷

Manchester City under Guardiola: eleven goals, then the exit

This ranking judges the signings Pep Guardiola made at Manchester City, and it is the list that flatters Ferran Torres least. He lasted eighteen months.

The first season was not the trouble. Torres scored 11 goals in 30 games in 2020/21, City took the Premier League and the League Cup, and Guardiola moved him off the wing and used him as a centre forward.⁵

The second season went differently — four appearances, two goals, and a move to Barcelona before Christmas.⁵

Rodri holds the other half of this pairing, and the distance between the two is counted in seasons rather than talent. Guardiola's best purchases became fixtures for five and six years at a time. Torres left before his second Christmas in Manchester, and everything he is ranked for now happened afterwards.

Valencia's academy: the first player born this century to play in La Liga

Valencia's academy has turned out a long line of internationals and this ranking picks ten. Ferran Torres joined it at seven years old, after starting out in futsal at the EPLA school.⁵

One date keeps him on the list. Torres played his first La Liga match on 16 December 2017 against Eibar and became the first player born in the 21st century to appear in the competition.⁵

Everything after that was steady rather than startling. He made 97 appearances for Valencia and scored nine goals, which was enough for Guardiola to buy him and short of enough to make him a Mestalla legend.⁵

La Liga's forwards over the season just finished are the field here, and it is where Ferran Torres has documentary evidence rather than a story.

Sorting footballers by birth year produces a list nobody would design on purpose, and Ferran Torres has a technicality in his favour. He was born on 29 February 2000 in Foios, outside Valencia, so his birthday comes round once every four years.⁵

Barcelona's billion-euro clause, and the four years before it paid

This is the least flattering list Ferran Torres appears on, and for a long time it had a case. Barcelona signed him in December 2021 and set his buyout clause at €1 billion, a figure the club attaches to players it expects to define an era.⁶

The goals took their time. Between the move and 2024 the word attached to him in Spain was potential, and potential does not carry a ten-figure clause.

What changed the reading is what the goals eventually did.
