# Las Vegas, Ranked 15 Different Ways

> A race circuit, an advertising slogan, a Nicolas Cage role, a hockey title: fifteen rankings that each put Las Vegas in a different category.

Las Vegas drew an estimated 38.5 million visitors in 2025, down 7.5% on the year before.<a href="#src-1" id="ref-1">1</a> The city responded the way it always does, by buying its way into something else. A Formula 1 race now runs down the Strip on a contract that lasts until 2037.<a href="#src-2" id="ref-2">2</a> The Athletics are building a ballpark on the rubble of the Tropicana.

So it is a reasonable moment to ask what the place is actually good at. Fifteen rankings here contain Las Vegas or something that borrowed its name. The questions behind them have almost nothing in common. One is about NASCAR ovals. One is about art-pop albums. One is about a Nicolas Cage performance.

> Las Vegas was built to be judged on gambling, and nearly every list it lands on now is about something it bolted on later.

## The Strip vs the Grand Canyon

The broadest ranking here asks which tourist attraction in the world is worth visiting, and it puts four miles of casino frontage against sixty-four rivals, and the United States is younger than most of them.

The Strip's case is volume. Even after a bad year it moved that many people, and 6.0 million of those came for a convention rather than a holiday, the one segment that grew during the slump.<a href="#src-1" id="ref-1b">1</a> Nothing else on the list is engineered that hard for throughput.

The Grand Canyon's case is that it was already there. Six hours by car from the Strip, it is the comparison Las Vegas cannot win on any measure except hotel rooms.

Also on the list: the Colosseum, Machu Picchu, Angkor Wat, the Pyramids of Giza. That is the company a street of casinos keeps once you ask the question this widely, and it is why the Strip reads differently here than it does in any other ranking on this page.

## Sphere is not yet three years old. The Welcome sign is 67.

Ask which landmark says Las Vegas fastest and the answer splits by generation, because the city keeps replacing its own postcard.

Betty Willis designed the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign in 1959, and she never copyrighted it, which is why it has been free to print on every souvenir since. Sphere opened in September 2023 at a cost of $2.3 billion, stands 366 feet high and seats 18,600.<a href="#src-3" id="ref-3">3</a>

Between those two sit the Bellagio fountains, the Luxor beam, the Stratosphere and Fremont Street's neon canopy downtown. Hoover Dam and Red Rock Canyon also appear, both of them doing fine before the first casino opened.

## Bellagio vs Caesars Palace

Twenty resorts stand on the Strip, and the ranking that pits them against each other is the closest thing here to the city judging itself on its original business.

Caesars Palace opened in 1966 and has the deeper history: the Colosseum, the Roman columns, the Evel Knievel jump over its fountains in 1967. Bellagio arrived in 1998 and set the standard everything built afterwards had to answer, starting with the lake out front.

The newest towers make the opposite case. Resorts World opened in 2021, Fontainebleau finally opened in 2023 after sixteen years and three owners, and both are betting that a city selling nostalgia still rewards new carpet.

The Flamingo is the odd one out. Open since 1946, it predates every rival on the list by half a century, and it trades on that alone.

## Scorsese, Soderbergh and the same four miles

Few cities have been filmed this often by directors who disagree completely about what they are looking at.

Martin Scorsese used Las Vegas in 1995 as a story about skimming, violence and the corporate takeover that ended the mob's run. Steven Soderbergh used it in 2001 as a playground where eleven charming men rob three vaults and nobody gets hurt.

The same list holds the Rat Pack original from 1960, shot while Sinatra and Dean Martin were performing at the Sands each night, and *Rain Man*, which took Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise to a Caesars Palace blackjack table in 1988.

Then there is *The Hangover*, which in 2009 sold the city to a generation that had never seen a Sinatra film, and *Showgirls*, which flopped in 1995 and came back as a cult object.

## Leaving Las Vegas won Nicolas Cage the Oscar

Cage has fifteen roles on this ranking, and the one the Academy gave him Best Actor for is a screenwriter who moves to Las Vegas specifically to drink himself to death.

That is the city's strangest appearance on any list here. It is not the backdrop to a heist or a bachelor party. It is the place a man chooses because nobody there will stop him.

The competition is the fun part: Castor Troy in *Face/Off*, H.I. McDunnough in *Raising Arizona*, Ronny Cammareri in *Moonstruck*, and the late-career revival of *Pig* and *Mandy*.

## Elvis built the residency. Céline industrialised it.

For thirty years a Las Vegas residency was where a career went when it was over. This ranking is the history of that reputation being dismantled.

Elvis Presley opened at the International in 1969 and played the room, later the Hilton, until 1976. Céline Dion took the Colosseum at Caesars Palace from 2003 and turned a run of shows into a five-year contract, which is the model everyone signs today.

The current version is stranger than either. U2 opened Sphere in 2023, a venue whose screen wraps around the audience, and Dead & Company followed with a residency built entirely around what that screen can do.<a href="#src-3" id="ref-3b">3</a>

Liberace and Wayne Newton are on the list as the local institutions, and Adele, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga and Usher are on it as proof that the format now attracts artists at the peak of their touring years rather than the end of them.

## What Happens Here, Stays Here vs Just Do It

This is the only ranking on the page where Las Vegas competes as a brand, against Nike, Coca-Cola, Apple and McDonald's.

The line was written by Jeff Candido and Jason Hoff, two copywriters in their twenties at R&R Partners, and it first ran on Super Bowl Sunday in 2003.<a href="#src-4" id="ref-4">4</a> The brief was impossible on network television: sell adult freedom without showing any of it.

What it bought was a permission slip. Twenty-three years on, people use the sentence about weekends nowhere near Nevada, which is more than most corporate slogans on the list ever managed.

The company it keeps: "Just Do It", "Think Different", "A Diamond Is Forever", "Melts in Your Mouth, Not in Your Hands". Every one of those sells an object. Las Vegas is the only entry selling a place, and the only one written for a city rather than a product.

## The Strip closes for Formula 1

Once a year the road in the hero photo becomes a race track. The Las Vegas Strip Circuit runs 6.201km past the casinos, and the race is contracted to stay until 2037.<a href="#src-2" id="ref-2b">2</a>

Purists were sceptical from the start, and the reasons are real: the corners are ninety-degree junctions, the track is flat, and the surface belongs to a city that has to hand it back on Sunday night.

The counter-case is what the circuit is for. It races at night in November, when the desert is cold and the neon does the work no purpose-built venue can fake, and the 2026 running is round 21 of the season on 19–21 November.<a href="#src-5" id="ref-5">5</a>

Its rivals on this ranking are Marina Bay in Singapore, which has the same night-race idea with better corners, plus Austin, Baku, Jeddah and Miami. Vegas is the newest name in that group and the only one that closes a working commercial street to exist.

## Las Vegas Motor Speedway vs Daytona

The other motorsport ranking here is the unglamorous one, and it is where the city's second race track has to argue for itself.

Las Vegas Motor Speedway is a 1.5-mile oval twenty minutes north of the Strip, opened in 1996 and rebuilt in 2006 with progressive banking. It is a modern, comfortable, well-attended stop on the calendar.

Daytona has the Great American Race, Talladega has the speed records, Bristol has the noise and Darlington has the wall that scars every car that runs there. Against that, a well-run desert oval is a hard sell.

## Montreal have 24 Stanley Cups. Vegas have one.

Las Vegas had no major league team until 2017. Nine years later it has an NFL franchise, a WNBA dynasty and a Stanley Cup, which is why the city keeps appearing in rankings built long before it had any right to be there.

The Golden Knights won the Cup in June 2023, beating Florida 9-3 in Game 5 at T-Mobile Arena in their sixth season of existence.<a href="#src-6" id="ref-6">6</a> No post-1967 expansion team had done it faster.

Six is not much against the Canadiens' 24 titles, or the Islanders' four in a row, or the Oilers of Gretzky and Messier. This ranking asks which champion team was the greatest, and a first-time winner is arguing from a single season while everyone else brings a decade.

The Aces are the stronger sports case the city has, with WNBA titles in 2022, 2023 and 2025.<a href="#src-7" id="ref-7">7</a> They are not eligible here, because this list is hockey, and that is the mechanism this whole article runs on: change the question and Las Vegas changes value.

## Mona Lisa vs the Las Vegas Strip

Every city with this much reputation eventually lands on the list of places that do not repay the trip, and Las Vegas belongs on it for a specific reason: the gap between the advertising and the pavement is wider here than almost anywhere.

The case against is easy to state. Resort fees, queues for a table, a walk between two hotels that looks like ten minutes and takes forty, and a hangover in a city built to sell you the next one.

The case for is that the Strip is honest about what it is, which is more than the Mona Lisa manages, a small painting under glass with a 45-minute queue in front of it, or Checkpoint Charlie, where costumed actors charge tourists for photographs at a replica guard hut.

The remaining field reads as a catalogue of famous disappointments: Times Square, Stonehenge behind its rope line, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Manneken Pis, the Blarney Stone, and the sunset at Oia watched shoulder to shoulder with a thousand other people.

## Hunter S. Thompson's Vegas, played by Johnny Depp

Depp's most quoted performance is set in a Las Vegas that exists mostly inside a car and a hotel room, from a book that used a motorcycle race and a district attorneys' drug conference as its excuse for being there.

Terry Gilliam filmed it in 1998, and the city it shows is neither the mob's Vegas nor the family-resort Vegas that replaced it. It is a 1971 hallucination with a convention badge on.

Against it stand Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Donnie Brasco and Jack Sparrow. Raoul Duke is the one whose location does half the acting.

## Fallout: New Vegas kept the Strip standing

Obsidian's 2010 role-playing game is set in a Mojave where the bombs fell and the casinos did not. The Strip still runs, still takes your money, and is fought over by three factions instead of three corporations, which is the joke the whole game is built on.

It sits in a ranking of open-world games alongside Breath of the Wild, Red Dead Redemption 2, Skyrim, Elden Ring and Grand Theft Auto V. That is the most decorated company any Las Vegas entry keeps on this page.

Its own case is not scale but consequence: choices that stick, factions that remember, and an ending that changes with them. Sixteen years on, players still argue about which faction should hold the dam.

## Cocteau Twins called an album Heaven or Las Vegas

The strangest appearance of the city's name on this page belongs to a Scottish band who recorded their 1990 record in Gloucestershire and had almost nothing to do with Nevada.

Elizabeth Fraser sang most of it in syllables rather than words, and the title stuck because it named a feeling the music kept reaching for: enormous, artificial, lit from inside. Robin Guthrie has said the sleeve and the title came from that mood rather than the place.

It stands here against Kate Bush's *Hounds of Love*, Bowie's *Ziggy Stardust*, Björk's *Homogenic* and Talking Heads' *Remain in Light*, which is the sharpest end of the genre.

## Viva Las Vegas vs Carnal Knowledge

The last ranking is the narrowest, and it is where Las Vegas did somebody a real favour. Ann-Margret made twelve films that matter, and *Viva Las Vegas*, the 1964 musical with Elvis Presley, is the one that made her famous.

Her strongest work came later and darker: an Oscar nomination for Mike Nichols' *Carnal Knowledge* in 1971, and another for Ken Russell's *Tommy* in 1975.

## Fifteen rankings, and gambling barely comes up

Read back through them and the casinos are almost incidental. Las Vegas is here as a race track, a slogan, a screen, a hockey expansion, an album title and a place a fictional screenwriter went to die. The city spent sixty years building things to be famous for besides the tables, and it worked so well that the tables now need the rest.

The next chapter is already under construction: the Athletics' ballpark is due to open on the old Tropicana site in 2028.<a href="#src-8" id="ref-8">8</a>

All fifteen of these questions resolve [one matchup at a time](/articles/what-is-pairwise-comparison), and that is how a single city ends up enormous in one ranking and a footnote in the next.

Know somewhere that keeps appearing on lists it has no claim to? Put the question up and see what people do with it.
