# Tiger Woods vs Jack Nicklaus, Major by Major

Golf is the only major sport that keeps four separate championships and calls all of them the summit. Jack Nicklaus won 18 of them; Tiger Woods won 15.12 That three-title gap has been the unit of measurement for the whole argument since the late 1990s, and Woods turned 50 in December 2025 without closing it.2
The trouble with the gap is that it only answers one question. Golf keeps four scoreboards, and the two men do not lead the same ones.

## Tiger Woods vs Jack Nicklaus: a total against a ceiling
The broadest golf ranking on the site asks the plain question. Arithmetic does most of the work on this one.
Nicklaus has the number that ends conversations, and he built it across 24 years. He was also runner-up in a major 18 times between 1962 and 1986, the figure his defenders reach for second.1 Nobody else has been that close to winning that often.
Woods has the peak. He held all four majors at once across the 2000 and 2001 seasons, a run golf named the Tiger Slam because the existing vocabulary did not cover it.2 Nicklaus never did that.
So the list splits on a genuine question rather than a preference: whether greatness is a total or a ceiling. Neither man has an answer that beats the other one cleanly, which is why it outlasted thirty years of both men being retired.

## Augusta National: six green jackets against five
The Masters is the one course both men kept returning to, and the only major where they finished within a single title of each other.
Nicklaus won it six times, in 1963, 1965, 1966, 1972, 1975 and 1986.1 The last of those came at 46, and it is still the oldest Masters win on record — a 23-year span between first and sixth that no other Augusta champion approaches.
Woods won five, in 1997, 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2019.2 The bookends carry the weight: the first at 21, the fifth at 43 after four back surgeries and 11 years without a major.
Augusta is also where the two careers rhyme most closely. Both men won there young, both went quiet, and both came back to win it again long after the sport had written the ending. The gap here is one jacket, and it is the narrowest margin between them anywhere in this article.

## Bobby Jones and the US Open that predates both of them
At the US Open the argument acquires a third and fourth party, because the record being chased was set before either man was born.
Four US Open titles is the all-time mark, and four golfers share it: Willie Anderson, Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Nicklaus.3 Jones won his in 1923, 1926, 1929 and 1930 as an amateur, then retired at 28 after completing the only single-year Grand Slam golf has ever seen.3
Woods won three, in 2000, 2002 and 2008.2 The first of them was the 15-stroke win at Pebble Beach, the largest margin in major championship history and the single most lopsided week either man ever played.
This is the section where the frame stops showing Woods against Nicklaus, because the honest matchup is Woods against a man who quit the sport in 1930. On a list of US Open champions the two subjects of this article are two entries among four equals, and one of the other two never turned professional while he was winning.

## Harry Vardon still owns the Open Championship
The Open is the one major played outside America, and the one where both men are chasing a leader from the Edwardian era.
Harry Vardon won it six times, in 1896, 1898, 1899, 1903, 1911 and 1914, and the record has stood for over a century.4
Nicklaus and Woods won three apiece: Nicklaus in 1966, 1970 and 1978, Woods in 2000, 2005 and 2006.12 It is the only major where the two are exactly level, which makes it the least useful list for settling anything and the most interesting one for showing how little the headline gap explains.

## The PGA Championship: the major that settles the count
Here the gap in the majors count finally has a visible source.
Nicklaus won the PGA Championship five times, Woods four.12 Add that to the Masters and the US Open and the entire gap is accounted for, without either man ever losing the head-to-head on any single course.

## 82 wins against 73: the PGA Tour keeps a different ledger
Change the unit from majors to tournaments and the order changes with it.
Woods has 82 PGA Tour victories, level with Sam Snead at the top of the all-time list.2 Nicklaus has 73.1 On the measure golf uses every week of the year rather than four weeks of it, Woods leads by nine.
The counter-argument is that the two men were counting in different eras, against different fields, on courses that changed underneath them. That is true, and it is equally true of the majors count that runs the other way.

Nicklaus won his last major in 1986. A ranking of this century's best athletes cannot hold him, no matter what the previous six sections established.
Woods qualifies on the 2000s alone, and his 2019 Masters sits inside the window as well. The company is Usain Bolt, LeBron James and Serena Williams rather than Vardon and Jones, and a golfer set against a sprinter with eight Olympic golds is a different kind of comparison entirely.

Golf's reach is the constraint here rather than either career. A sport with no global league and four events a year does not produce the audience that football does, and the major titles that dominate the top of this article count for very little on a list that includes Cristiano Ronaldo.

## Nine lists, and the gap shows up in only one of them
The three-title gap comes almost entirely from the PGA Championship and the US Open. At Augusta the margin is a single jacket. At the Open Championship there is no margin at all. On tour wins the order reverses, and on the lists that leave golf behind Nicklaus stops appearing.
