# Stonehenge vs the Pyramids: Which Is Older? 12 Lists Where They Meet
> Stonehenge's first ditch is older than the Great Pyramid and its stone circle younger. Twelve rankings put the two side by side, from engineering to Civilization VI.

Stonehenge and the Pyramids of Giza went up within a few centuries of each other, and archaeologists are still adding to the story of how. This month a paper in the Journal of Quaternary Science proposed that ice carried Stonehenge's Altar Stone part of the way from Scotland, leaving people to haul it the rest.1
The question of which is older has a split answer. English Heritage dates the first Stonehenge, a circular ditch and bank, to about 3000 BC, and the stone circle to about 2500 BC.2 The Great Pyramid of Khufu falls between the two, around 2560 BC.
The 12 rankings below put the two monuments on the same lists: engineering, legends, film scenes, a strategy game and eight more.

## Stonehenge vs the Pyramids of Giza as a place to visit
Sixty-four places compete in the ranking of the best tourist attractions to visit. Both monuments are among them, next to the Eiffel Tower, Machu Picchu, the Grand Canyon and the Northern Lights.
Giza has more to see than it did a year ago. The Grand Egyptian Museum opened in full on 1 November 2025 on the edge of the plateau, with whole halls given to Tutankhamun's treasures.3
Stonehenge is a shorter visit. The stones stand on open chalk downland in Wiltshire, within a day trip of London, and visitors walk a path around them rather than among them.

## Stonehenge vs Taj Mahal: the most iconic landmark
The 25 Most Iconic Landmarks in the World mixes old and new: the Eiffel Tower of 1889, the Burj Khalifa of 2010, the Sydney Opera House, the Colosseum and the Statue of Liberty.
The Great Pyramid has a title no other entry can claim. Of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it came first and alone survives.
Stonehenge works as an outline. Two uprights and a lintel are enough to identify it, which is a test few buildings on the list could pass.
The Taj Mahal is the entry with the strongest claim to beauty alone. Shah Jahan built it in Agra as a tomb for his wife, which makes it a relative of the pyramids more than 4,000 years younger.

## The most overrated tourist attraction: Stonehenge and Giza
Neither monument's fans enjoy finding it among the most overrated tourist attractions, a list that also holds the Mona Lisa, Times Square, the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen and Checkpoint Charlie.
Stonehenge's complaint is the road. The A303 passes a few hundred metres from the stones. In July 2024 Chancellor Rachel Reeves cancelled the £2 billion plan to put it in a tunnel, saying the scheme would have cost £587 million in the following year alone.4
The pyramids' complaint is the approach: camel touts, horse rides and a Pizza Hut across the road from the Sphinx.

## Great Pyramid vs Stonehenge: the greatest engineering achievement
Both monuments compete with the Apollo landings, the Panama Canal, the transistor and the Large Hadron Collider for the title of greatest engineering achievement in history.
The Great Pyramid rose to 146.6 metres and stayed the tallest structure on Earth from about 2600 BC until Old St Paul's Cathedral in London passed it in 1221. Its King's Chamber is lined with granite brought from Aswan in blocks of up to 80 tonnes.5
Its builders kept records. The Diary of Merer, the oldest known papyri with writing on them, is an official's logbook of boat trips carrying Tura limestone to Giza.6
Stonehenge's case is precision without writing. Its builders shaped the sarsens and locked the lintels on with joints borrowed from carpentry, then fitted the curved lintels into a level ring.
Size favours the pyramid. For Stonehenge the counter-argument is who built it: farmers with no state and no script.

## Pyramids vs Stonehenge among ancient monuments
The 22 Most Impressive Ancient Monuments in the World keeps to buildings raised before the end of the Roman Empire in the West: the Parthenon, the Colosseum, Petra, the Terracotta Army and Persepolis.
The pyramids have scale on their side. No other entry on the list is anywhere near as massive.
Stonehenge's claim is its lintels, which no other prehistoric stone circle has.
Two entries are older than both of them. Göbekli Tepe in Turkey was built by hunter-gatherers about 11,000 years ago, and Newgrange in Ireland predates the Great Pyramid by several centuries.

## Stonehenge vs Giza: the most mysterious ancient site
The 20 Most Mysterious Ancient Sites in the World adds the Nazca Lines, the moai quarry of Rano Raraku, Great Zimbabwe, the Plain of Jars and the undersea terraces off Yonaguni.
Stonehenge has the bigger unknown. Nobody knows what it was for, and each new result reopens the question. In 2024 a study in Nature traced the Altar Stone, a six-tonne block, to the Orcadian Basin of north-east Scotland, at least 750 km from where it lies, while the bluestones came about 225 km from the Preseli hills in Wales.7
The pyramids' puzzle is narrower. Everyone agrees they were tombs, and the names of the kings are known; the open question is how the blocks were raised, and whether by ramps inside or outside the walls.

## Merlin vs Joseph's granaries: the best legend
The contest for the best legend attached to an ancient monument includes the Trojan horse, the Minotaur's labyrinth at Knossos, the walking moai of Easter Island and a Cornish circle of girls turned to stone for dancing on a Sunday.
Stonehenge's legend has a named author. In his History of the Kings of Britain, written in 1136, Geoffrey of Monmouth had the wizard Merlin bring the stones over from Ireland, and English Heritage notes the idea was widely believed until the 16th century.2
The pyramids collected a Bible story. Medieval Christians took them for the granaries of Joseph, and a mosaic of about 1275 in St Mark's Basilica in Venice shows men loading sheaves into a pyramid.8

## Stonehenge at midsummer, Giza at sunset
The solstice ranking is made of places built to catch a single sunrise or sunset: Newgrange, Maeshowe on Orkney, Chankillo in Peru, the Goseck circle in Germany and Chaco Canyon in New Mexico.
Stonehenge is the obvious pick. The monument is aligned on the midsummer sunrise and the midwinter sunset, and English Heritage opens the stones to an overnight crowd each June.
Giza has an alignment few visitors know about. Egypt's antiquities authorities say that at the summer solstice, seen from the Sphinx, the sun sets between the pyramids of Khufu and Khafre.9
The quieter entries offer the rarer moment. At Newgrange a beam reaches the back of the passage for a few minutes on the mornings around the winter solstice.

## This Is Spinal Tap vs La Dolce Vita: landmarks on film
In the ranking of movie scenes at famous landmarks, each landmark comes with its film: King Kong on the Empire State Building, Cary Grant on Mount Rushmore, Rocky on the Philadelphia museum steps.
Stonehenge's scene is a joke about scale. In This Is Spinal Tap (1984) the band orders a stage Stonehenge and receives one 18 inches high instead of 18 feet.
Giza's scene is a Bond chase. The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) filmed the Sphinx on location, but lighting problems meant the pyramids behind Roger Moore were replaced with miniatures.10
La Dolce Vita needed no trick. In 1960 Fellini filmed Anita Ekberg wading into the Trevi Fountain at night, on location.

## Civilization VI: Pyramids vs Stonehenge as wonders
Civilization VI players race each other to finish wonders, and this ranking sorts the ones in Sid Meier's base game.
Both monuments are Ancient Era wonders there. Stonehenge grants a free Great Prophet, the fastest route to founding a religion. The Pyramids give every Builder an extra charge, which pays off over the whole game.

## Stonehenge vs Avebury: the best stone circle in Britain and Ireland
The 24 Best Stone Circles in Britain and Ireland is the list where Stonehenge has the most company and the pyramids have none. Aubrey Burl's gazetteer counts 1,303 stone circles in Britain, Ireland and Brittany, most of them in Scotland.11
UNESCO's listing for the two Wiltshire sites divides the honours: Stonehenge is the most architecturally sophisticated prehistoric stone circle in the world, and Avebury, on the Marlborough Downs to the north, is the largest.12
The other circles are rural and often empty. Castlerigg sits in a ring of Cumbrian fells, Calanais on the Isle of Lewis, the Ring of Brodgar between two lochs on Orkney, and Drombeg in West Cork faces the midwinter sunset.
For a Stonehenge sceptic the counter-argument is access. At most of these circles visitors can walk among the stones.

## Pyramids of Giza vs Abu Simbel: the greatest Egyptian monument
The 21 Greatest Ancient Egyptian Monuments leaves Stonehenge out and asks the pyramids to compete with their own country: Karnak, the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, Philae and the step pyramid of Djoser.
Abu Simbel is the strongest rival. Ramesses II's temples were cut from a Nubian cliff, and in the 1960s engineers cut them into blocks and rebuilt them on higher ground to save them from Lake Nasser.
Only three entries are older than Giza: Djoser's step pyramid at Saqqara and Sneferu's Bent and Red pyramids at Dahshur, the trials that led to it.

## Stone circle or pyramid
The Pyramids of Giza have the stronger case on height, tonnage and paperwork. Stonehenge draws its pull from what is missing: a purpose, a builder's name, a single written word.
