Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have met 36 times, split the Ballon d'Or between them for a solid decade, and just played their last World Cups eleven days apart — Ronaldo knocked out by Spain on 6 July 2026, Messi beaten by Spain in the final on 19 July. Ronaldo has scored 974 career goals to Messi's 919. Messi scores more often per match, 0.79 to 0.73. Below they turn up in 16 rankings, and the name in front changes with the question.

> Ask who scored more and you get one answer. Ask who won more, or who lasted longer, or who was loved more, and you get a different one each time.

## The whole argument, in one list

Every Messi-versus-Ronaldo conversation eventually collapses into this question, which is why it is the worst place to start and the most honest one to open with.

Messi's case rests on eight Ballon d'Or awards — more than anyone in the award's history — and the 2022 World Cup that closed the last gap in his record.

Ronaldo's rests on volume and reach: 974 career goals, the all-time records for men's international caps and international goals, and league titles in England, Spain and Italy.

Then there is everyone else. Pelé won three World Cups, Maradona carried a country through 1986, and Cruyff changed how the game is played. A list this wide is the one place where the modern rivalry stops being the only story.

## The award that kept going to one of them

France Football's Ballon d'Or spent fifteen years as a two-man contest. Between 2008 and 2017 the trophy went to Messi or Ronaldo every single year.

Messi finished with eight, the most in the award's history, spread from 2009 to 2023. Ronaldo finished with five, won between 2008 and 2017 across spells at Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Every other winner this century has exactly one: Ronaldo Nazário, Kaká, Ronaldinho, Fabio Cannavaro, Luka Modrić, Karim Benzema, Rodri. Thirteen of the last eighteen awards went to two men.

That is what makes the ranking harder than the count suggests. If the question is who won it most, it is settled. If it is who deserved it most in the years they lost it, it reopens immediately.

## Europe's biggest night

The Champions League is the lens where Ronaldo's case is at its strongest and Messi's is merely excellent.

Ronaldo won five, four of them at Real Madrid including three in a row, and he remains the competition's all-time leading scorer.

Messi won four with Barcelona, and the 2008-09 side he led is still the reference point for how the competition can be played rather than just won.

The field around them is deep enough to make either claim contestable: Paolo Maldini, Zinedine Zidane, Raúl, Clarence Seedorf and Didier Drogba all built their reputations on these nights, and Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland are still adding to theirs.

## Nine years in the same league

From 2009 to 2018 Messi and Ronaldo played in the same division, twice a season against each other, and La Liga has never had a decade like it since.

Messi is the league's all-time leading scorer with 474 goals in 520 appearances. That is a total no one is likely to approach.

Ronaldo scored 311 in 292 appearances, a rate of 1.07 goals per game that is the best sustained ratio the league has recorded.

Which is why "best striker in La Liga history" splits along whichever number you trust — and why Alfredo Di Stéfano, Telmo Zarra and Hugo Sánchez are still on the list, from decades when a Pichichi took thirty goals, not fifty.

## Six World Cups each, and a German in front

Messi and Ronaldo both played six World Cups. Neither of them holds the tournament's scoring record.

That belongs to Miroslav Klose, whose 16 goals across 2002 to 2014 came at a rate no modern forward has matched, and whose name most people forget until a list like this puts it back in front of them.

Messi is the closer of the two, having kept adding to his total in 2018, 2022 and 2026 while most of the names above him stopped a decade or more ago.

Ronaldo carried the strangest line on his CV until this summer: he had scored in five different World Cups and never once in a knockout match, a drought that ran to eight games. It ended in the 2026 round of 32 against Croatia, with a penalty on 68 minutes that made him the oldest player to score in a World Cup knockout tie, at 41 years and four months.

## The list Messi is not allowed on

This is the sharpest asymmetry in the whole rivalry, and the only ranking here that Messi is disqualified from by achievement.

He won the World Cup in 2022. That single result removed him from every "greatest never to win it" conversation for good.

Ronaldo played six World Cups, won the Euros, the Champions League five times and league titles in three countries, and finished with the one trophy missing. His last attempt ended on 6 July 2026, beaten 1-0 by Spain in the round of 16 in a tournament he had announced the day before would be his last.

The company on this list is the point. Johan Cruyff lost the 1974 final, Ferenc Puskás scored in the 1954 final Hungary somehow lost, and Alfredo Di Stéfano never played at a World Cup at all.

## Their last tournament, five weeks long

The 2026 World Cup was the last for both of them, and Spain ended both runs.

Ronaldo went out in the round of 16 on 6 July, at 41. Messi played on to the final on 19 July at MetLife Stadium, where Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain after extra time — 740 minutes of football across six weeks, at 39, in a tournament with three extra-time matches in it.

They never met. Portugal and Argentina were in opposite halves of the draw, and the fixture that would have closed twenty years of argument never got made.

The list around them belongs to the players who actually won it: Rodri, Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Ferran Torres and the Spain side that beat them both.

## The tournament Messi could never enter

Ronaldo is the all-time top scorer in European Championship history with 14 goals across six tournaments from 2004 to 2024, and he captained Portugal to the country's first major trophy at Euro 2016.

Messi is not on this list, and never could have been. He was born in Rosario, and the European Championship is closed to him the way the Copa América is closed to Ronaldo.

That accident of geography is worth pausing on, because it is the reason so much of this rivalry has to be argued by analogy rather than measured directly.

The names Ronaldo is measured against here are Michel Platini, who scored nine goals in a single tournament in 1984, and Marco van Basten, whose 1988 volley is the most replayed goal in the competition's history.

## The tournament Ronaldo could never enter

South America's answer to the Euros is where Messi finally stopped being the man who lost finals.

He has 13 Copa América goals, took the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball in 2021 as Argentina ended a 28-year wait for a major title, then won the tournament again in 2024. The all-time record still belongs to Zizinho and Norberto Méndez, who scored 17 apiece in the 1940s.

Ronaldo has no entry here, for the same reason Messi has none at the Euros — a rivalry conducted almost entirely at long range.

The company is Brazilian and Chilean and Colombian: Romário, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo Nazário, Carlos Valderrama, Alexis Sánchez, Arturo Vidal. This is the one continental list where Messi's competition is not Ronaldo at all.

## Put both continents on one list

Two tournaments neither could enter, one ranking that holds both — this is as close to a direct measurement as the rivalry allows.

Ronaldo's 14 goals at the Euros are that competition's record. Messi's 13 at the Copa América are not — Zizinho and Norberto Méndez sit four ahead of him, from the 1940s.

The tournaments are not equivalent either. The Copa América has been played far more often, sometimes in successive years, while the Euros run on a strict four-year cycle.

Ali Daei, Samuel Eto'o and Michel Platini are on the same list, and Hossam Hassan's Africa Cup of Nations record is the kind of number that only surfaces when someone builds a ranking like this one.

## The specialists' list

Free kicks are where both of them are famous and neither is the best.

Ronaldo's knuckleball technique became the most imitated dead-ball routine of the 2000s, and his conversion rate fell steadily as goalkeepers learned to read it.

Messi's free-kick record improved with age — most of his came after 2015, once he changed his approach to a low, curled shot inside the near post rather than over the wall.

Juninho Pernambucano scored more free kicks than anyone on record and is the name every specialist cites first. Roberto Carlos, Andrea Pirlo, Zico, David Beckham and James Ward-Prowse all built a share of their reputation on the same skill.

## Two numbers that became brands

Messi and Ronaldo did something to their shirt numbers that almost nobody manages: they took a number they inherited and made it mean themselves.

Ronaldo's 7 arrived at Manchester United in 2003 as a hand-me-down from George Best, Eric Cantona and David Beckham, and left as CR7 — a clothing line, a hotel chain and a museum.

Messi's 10 came from Ronaldinho at Barcelona in 2008, in a lineage that runs back through Maradona and Pelé to the point where "the number 10" describes a role rather than a squad position.

The list is full of numbers that outlived their owners: Cruyff's 14, Maldini's 3, Beckenbauer's 5, Bobby Moore's 6, Pirlo's 21.

## Still playing at 39 and 41

This lens did not exist for most of the rivalry. It opened up because both of them refused to stop.

Ronaldo turned 41 in February 2026 and is contracted to Al-Nassr until the summer of 2027, having returned to pre-season training on 27 July.

Messi turned 39 during the 2026 World Cup, played 740 minutes of it, and is signed to Inter Miami through the 2028 MLS season.

Longevity is a category with its own aristocracy, and it is mostly goalkeepers and defenders: Paolo Maldini, Gianluigi Buffon, Dino Zoff, Peter Shilton, Javier Zanetti. Roger Milla played a World Cup at 42 and Kazuyoshi Miura was still a professional at 57. Forwards are not supposed to be here at all.

## Where Ronaldo went next

Ronaldo joined Al-Nassr in January 2023 and changed the economics of an entire league in about eighteen months.

Karim Benzema, Neymar, Sadio Mané, Riyad Mahrez, N'Golo Kanté and Rubén Neves followed him into the Saudi Pro League, most of them within two transfer windows.

Messi did not. He was reported to be the league's primary target in the same summer and went to Florida instead, which is the fork in the road this section and the next one describe.

The list is not only imports. Sami Al-Jaber played four World Cups for Saudi Arabia, Mohamed Al-Deayea won more caps than almost any goalkeeper in history, and Saeed Al-Owairan scored the goal of the 1994 World Cup — three careers built long before the money arrived.

<figure class="ranking-shot">

## Where Messi went next

Messi signed for Inter Miami in July 2023 and has said it will be the last club of his career. His contract runs through the 2028 MLS season.

Ronaldo's Saudi move and Messi's American one landed six months apart, and they are the clearest illustration of how differently the same decision can be taken.

The complication is that MLS has thirty years of history behind it and its own hierarchy. Landon Donovan won six MLS Cups and is the league's defining homegrown player; Carlos Valderrama, Marco Etcheverry and Preki built it in the 1990s.

David Beckham arrived in 2007 to do exactly what Messi is doing now, which is a useful reminder that the league has been through this before.

## Outside football entirely

Step out of the sport and the field gets much larger, and the two of them stop being each other's only rival.

Ronaldo is among the most-followed people on the planet on social media, a reach that has nothing to do with goals and everything to do with two decades of being the most photographed footballer alive.

Messi's fame runs differently — quieter, tied to the football itself, and amplified enormously by the 2022 World Cup.

Against Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Usain Bolt, Serena Williams, Roger Federer, Kobe Bryant and Sachin Tendulkar, both of them are simply two names among 32. That is the correct scale, and it is the one the rivalry never uses.

## The argument was never going to settle

Twenty years, 36 meetings and two careers that are now almost over, and the thing that decides who comes out ahead is not the evidence — it is which question you asked. Goals, trophies, longevity, reach, the tournaments they were each locked out of: every one of them produces a different name, and every one of them is a fair question. That is the same trick behind every ranking here — judging things [two at a time](/articles/what-is-pairwise-comparison).
