# Mayweather vs Pacquiao Was Five Years Late

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao fought each other exactly once, on 2 May 2015 at the MGM Grand, after talks that started in 2009 and were only signed on 20 February 2015.1 Mayweather won a unanimous decision and the press spent the next morning renaming the Fight of the Century "Better Never Than Late".
They were supposed to do it again yesterday. The rematch was announced by Netflix on 23 February 2026 for 19 September at the Sphere, moved to 26 September, and then postponed indefinitely on 25 June while lawsuits over Mayweather's competing contracts piled up.7
So the argument is still open, and it was never going to be settled by one scorecard anyway. These two built opposite careers out of the same decade.

## Mayweather vs Pacquiao: the pound-for-pound question
Pound-for-pound is boxing's attempt to compare fighters who never share a scale, and it is the one list where both men are automatic entries.
Mayweather's case is arithmetic. He retired at 50-0 with 27 knockouts and world titles in five divisions, and the Boxing Writers Association of America gave him its Fighter of the Decade award for the 2010s.3
Pacquiao's case is the range. His record reads 62-8-3 with 39 knockouts, and Ring Magazine named him Fighter of the Year three times and then Fighter of the Decade for the 2000s.4 He came back at 46 in July 2025 and drew with Mario Barrios for the WBC welterweight title, four years after his last fight.6
Neither of them has this list to himself. Bernard Hopkins was still taking world titles at 49, Andre Ward retired at 32-0, and Terence Crawford went undisputed in two weight classes.

## Pacquiao vs Sugar Ray Robinson: the welterweight ceiling
Welterweight is the division where Mayweather and Pacquiao actually met, which makes this the only ranking here that treats the fight as settled history.
It is also the division with the deepest back catalogue in boxing. Henry Armstrong and Sugar Ray Robinson held it in the 1930s and 1940s, and every modern welterweight is measured against men almost nobody watching now has seen fight.
Pacquiao arrived there from eight divisions below. He won the WBO welterweight title in 2009 against Miguel Cotto, ten years after fighting at flyweight.
Mayweather spent longer in the division than Pacquiao did, which is part of why the comparison stays awkward: one of them lived at the weight, the other was visiting from underneath it.

## Barrera, Morales, De La Hoya: the 2000s belonged to both of them
The 2000s are where the rivalry should have happened, and where each man built the record that made people want it.
Pacquiao spent the decade climbing. He stopped Marco Antonio Barrera, fought Erik Morales three times, and finished it by beating Oscar De La Hoya. Ring Magazine made him its fighter of those ten years on the strength of that run.4
Mayweather spent it choosing. He also beat De La Hoya, in 2007, and took Ricky Hatton's unbeaten record the same year, and moved up four divisions without losing.
The decade's other names are the reason this is not a two-man list. Bernard Hopkins knocked out De La Hoya in 2004, Joe Calzaghe left with 46 wins and no losses, and Juan Manuel Márquez fought Pacquiao to a draw in 2004 before losing a split decision to him in 2008.

## Canelo vs Mayweather: the decade that handed the sport over
The 2010s contain the fight, its aftermath, and the man who took over the box office afterwards.
Mayweather closed the decade at 50-0. He beat Canelo Álvarez in 2013, Pacquiao in 2015, and Conor McGregor by tenth-round stoppage on 26 August 2017 — the win that passed Rocky Marciano's 49-0 and sold 4.3 million domestic pay-per-views.5
Pacquiao kept headlining after the loss. He beat Keith Thurman for the WBA welterweight title in 2019, at 40, which is not a thing welterweights normally do.
Canelo is the reason the decade does not simply belong to the two of them. He arrived as Mayweather's opponent and left as the sport's biggest draw, with a Golovkin trilogy in between that two judges could not agree on.

## Eight divisions against five: the belts Pacquiao collected
On this ranking the difference between the two careers stops being a matter of taste and becomes a count.
Pacquiao is the only boxer in history to win world titles in eight weight divisions, from light flyweight to welterweight, and he was the lineal champion in four of them.4
Mayweather won titles in five — super featherweight, lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight and light middleweight — and never lost any of them in the ring.3
Thomas Hearns was the first man to take world titles in five divisions, Oscar De La Hoya managed six, and Henry Armstrong held three at the same time in 1938, which no modern rule would allow.

## Mayweather vs Cristiano Ronaldo: the $180 million night
One fight put both boxers on a list they otherwise have no business sharing with footballers and golfers.
Mayweather took a reported $180 million for 2 May 2015 and Pacquiao $120 million, out of a night that grossed more than $600 million.1 Mayweather topped the Forbes highest-paid athlete list four years running, in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.3
Pacquiao's money came in fewer, larger instalments. He never had a shoe deal or a league salary; he had pay-per-view nights and a country that stopped to watch them.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Tiger Woods qualify the opposite way. Their earnings arrived monthly for twenty years, built from salaries and sponsorships rather than from two men splitting $300 million for thirty-six minutes of work.

## Pacquiao vs Lionel Messi: fame that left the sport
Global fame is measured in recognition rather than titles, and it is where the two careers diverge most sharply.
Pacquiao was a serving politician while he was still fighting. He sat in the Philippine Senate from 30 June 2016 to 30 June 2022 and finished third in the 2022 presidential election with about four million votes.4
Mayweather's fame ran on the money itself. "Money" was the nickname, the private jets were the content, and the persona sold the tickets that the boxing alone would not have.
Messi, Usain Bolt and Serena Williams are the scale here. All three were famous in countries that do not follow their sports, which is the bar this ranking actually sets.

## Pacquiao vs Mayweather: the one question where being hard to hit hurts you
Watchability is the reverse of the pound-for-pound ranking, and the same two records produce the opposite reading.
Pacquiao finished 62 wins with 39 knockouts, thrown from angles that orthodox fighters kept failing to see. He fought Morales, Márquez and Barrera in an era when Mexican opponents came forward and stayed there.
Mayweather built his career on not being hit, which is thrilling or maddening depending on where you were sitting. He won 50 fights and stopped 27 of them, most of those early.
Mike Tyson and Arturo Gatti are the trouble on this list. Tyson ended more than twenty fights in the first round, and Gatti fought Micky Ward three times without taking a backward step, which is a hard standard for a points win to beat.

## 4.6 million buys: the fight as a business record
Here the fight itself is the entry, not the fighters, and the numbers are the reason the rematch kept almost happening.
Mayweather vs Pacquiao drew 4.6 million North American pay-per-view purchases and about $410 million in pay-per-view revenue.1 The Nevada State Athletic Commission counted a live gate of $72,198,500 from 16,219 tickets, an average of $4,450 a seat, against a previous record of $20 million.2
Mayweather appears on this list four separate times. The De La Hoya fight in 2007 set the record the Pacquiao fight broke, and the McGregor fight came within 300,000 buys of it.
The UFC's biggest night is on the same list. Khabib Nurmagomedov against Conor McGregor at UFC 229 outsold every mixed martial arts event before or since, and ended with a brawl that spilled out of the cage.
Those receipts are why a rematch stayed on the table for a decade. Nothing either man could do alone would out-earn what they did together in 2015.

## Mayweather's 50-0 against Pacquiao's eight losses
Overrated is the unflattering question, and the two men qualify for it on completely different grounds.
Mayweather's record is real and the objection is about timing. The Pacquiao fight was first discussed in 2009 and signed in 2015, by which point both men were past thirty-five, and several of the fifty wins came against opponents who arrived late or left early.
Pacquiao's objection is written into the record itself. Eight losses and three draws sit next to the eight divisions, and Juan Manuel Márquez knocked him unconscious in December 2012 in a fight he was winning.
Mike Tyson and Deontay Wilder are the other kind of candidate. Tyson went 6-3 across his last nine professional fights, and Wilder held a title for five years on the strength of one right hand.

## Better Never Than Late: the night itself
The richest fight in boxing history is also a candidate for its biggest letdown, and both facts come from the same twelve rounds.
Mayweather won 118-110, 116-112, 116-112 on cards that nobody disputed, fighting the careful fight he had fought for eighteen years.1 Pacquiao re-injured his right shoulder in the fourth round and disclosed it afterwards, which turned the post-fight week into an argument about paperwork.
Mayweather's own paperwork did not survive the week either. He had taken intravenous fluids the day before the fight under a retroactive exemption from the United States Anti-Doping Agency that the Nevada commission had not authorised.1
Lewis against Tyson in 2002 and Hagler against Leonard in 1987 qualify on the same grounds. A megafight can be a great business and a bad evening, and the audience remembers both.
What separates this one is the length of the wait. Six years of negotiation set an expectation no twelve rounds could meet.

## Mayweather vs Pernell Whitaker: the shoulder roll
Defence is the one boxing question built entirely around the thing Mayweather did best, and Pacquiao is not on the list at all.
Mayweather's shoulder roll — lead shoulder high, rear hand at the chin, opponent's best punch sliding off — carried fifty wins and left him almost unmarked at 40.3
Pacquiao's absence is the whole argument here. He fought going forward and took shots to land his own, which produced eight divisions, eight losses, and no case for this ranking.
Pernell Whitaker is the name that makes it a contest. He won titles in four divisions making world-class opponents miss so badly that judges struggled to score the rounds, and Willie Pep was reputed to have won one without throwing a punch.

## Marvin Hagler vs Pacquiao: the left-handed list
Stance is the cheapest way to split these two. Pacquiao fights southpaw, Mayweather fought orthodox, so one of them qualifies for this ranking and the other does not exist on it.
Pacquiao built eight divisions of titles on the straight left, thrown at a speed that gave right-handed opponents a problem they had usually only met in sparring.
Marvin Hagler is the counter-case. He held the middleweight title for seven years and switched stances mid-fight whenever it suited him, which is a harder skill than being left-handed by birth.
Oleksandr Usyk and Vasiliy Lomachenko keep the list current. Both are Ukrainian southpaws with Olympic gold, and Usyk held every heavyweight belt at once while Pacquiao was still fighting.

## Atlanta 1996: the medal Mayweather has and Pacquiao doesn't
Olympic boxing is the one credential that separates the two by biography rather than by style.
Mayweather won featherweight bronze at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, in a semi-final decision that American commentators complained about for years, and never lost again as a professional.3
Pacquiao went 60-4 as an amateur and never went to an Olympics at all.4 He turned professional at 16, under the minimum weight, with coins in his pockets to make the scale.

Nationality is the one filter Mayweather cannot pass. It produces the shortest ranking here: seven Filipino boxers, total.
Pacquiao is why the list travels. Eight divisions and a 2025 Hall of Fame induction, plus two decades as the most famous person in his country.

## George Weah vs Pacquiao: the athlete who took office
The last list leaves boxing completely, and it is the clearest example of how differently the two men spent the years around the fight.
Pacquiao did the two jobs at once. He was a sitting Philippine senator when he took the WBA welterweight title from Keith Thurman in 2019, and he served the full term before running for president.4
Mayweather has never stood for anything. His second career was promotion, gyms and exhibitions, which pays better and asks less.
