John Cena and Brock Lesnar arrived on WWE television five months apart in 2002, out of the same Ohio Valley development class. Twenty-three years later they closed the story within three months of each other: Lesnar beat Cena with a run of F-5s at Wrestlepalooza in Indianapolis on 20 September 2025,<a href="#src-7" id="ref-7">7</a> and Cena's final match came on 13 December in Washington, a submission loss to Gunther in front of a Capital One Arena crowd that had bought tickets to say goodbye.<a href="#src-1" id="ref-1">1</a>

Fifteen lists on this site involve one or the other of them. What each list is actually asking varies wildly.

> Cena and Lesnar started in the same 2002 class and built opposite cases: one career measured in title reigns and nights worked, the other in a championship no other wrestler has ever won.

## No Way Out 2004 and Money in the Bank 2011

The greatest-WWE-match ranking is the one place John Cena and Brock Lesnar appear not as names but as the opponent in somebody else's best night.

Lesnar's entry is Eddie Guerrero beating him for the WWE Championship at No Way Out in February 2004, the night that ended a decade of Guerrero being the most gifted man on the card and never the champion.

Cena's is CM Punk beating him at Money in the Bank in July 2011, in Punk's hometown of Chicago, with Punk's contract running out at midnight and the belt leaving the building.

Both matches are remembered for what the other guy did in them. The field around them is Shawn Michaels against The Undertaker at WrestleMania 25 and Bret Hart against Steve Austin, company that flatters anyone in it.

## Cena, Lesnar and the 2010s title picture

WWE's own profile calls Cena a 17-time world champion,<a href="#src-3" id="ref-3">3</a> and five of those reigns landed inside this decade, when he was also the man booked to work the most dates on the roster.

Lesnar spent the same ten years doing the opposite. He came back in 2012 after eight years away and was handed the top of the card on a schedule of a few appearances a year, which is why his name in a decade ranking still annoys people who watched every episode.

Three other names complicate all of it. CM Punk held the WWE Championship for well over a year between 2011 and 2013, Daniel Bryan won the thing at WrestleMania XXX after the crowd refused to accept anyone else, and Kofi Kingston waited eleven years for one night at WrestleMania 35.

## SummerSlam 2014: sixteen German suplexes

On 17 August 2014 Lesnar took the WWE World Heavyweight Championship off Cena in a main event that WWE's own recap describes without much sympathy: "16 — yes, 16 — German suplexes were rained down upon The Champ."<a href="#src-6" id="ref-6">6</a>

Cena got an STF in and one flurry of offence. Lesnar hit three F-5s and left with the belt.

It is the most one-sided title change of the modern era involving a headliner of Cena's standing, and it gave Lesnar the phrase he used for the next decade: Suplex City. For a man who had been the company's most protected act since 2005, being beaten that comprehensively on its second-biggest show was a genuine risk.

The SummerSlam ranking sits it next to Steve Austin against The Undertaker in 1998, Bret Hart against Owen Hart inside a cage in 1994, and CM Punk against Lesnar in 2013. Every one of those was competitive in a way this one deliberately was not.

## Hulk Hogan's record and Lesnar's 500 days

Lesnar's Universal Championship run from WrestleMania 33 to SummerSlam 2018 passed 500 days, which ESPN noted at the time was the longest world title reign in WWE since Hulk Hogan held the belt from 1984 to 1988.<a href="#src-8" id="ref-8">8</a>

He defended it roughly every other month. That is the whole case both for and against him in a dominance ranking: nobody could take it off him, and he was rarely there to be asked.

Cena's own longest run started at Unforgiven in September 2006 and ended over a year later, in October 2007, when WWE stripped him after a torn pectoral. He worked nearly every night of it.

Bruno Sammartino is the name that makes both of them look ordinary here. He held the WWWF Championship for most of the 1960s, a run measured in years where everyone else's is measured in months.

## Cena and Lesnar on the same unflattering list

John Cena and Brock Lesnar were both certain to end up on the most-overrated-wrestler ranking, for opposite reasons.

Cena's is the "same five moves" complaint that followed him from 2006 onwards, loud enough that arenas split into duelling chants for years.

Lesnar's is that a genuinely elite athlete settled into a match template — suplexes, F-5, home — and charged the company a fortune to repeat it.

## Extreme Rules 2012: the Cena match Lesnar is in

Cena's career has its own ranking, and Lesnar is inside it.

The entry is Extreme Rules 2012, Lesnar's first match back after eight years in the UFC. It was an extended, bloody brawl that Cena won on his last legs after taking most of it, and it did more for Lesnar's aura than a win would have.

The other names on Cena's list are CM Punk at Money in the Bank, AJ Styles at Royal Rumble 2017, and Shawn Michaels in the hour-long Raw match from London in 2007. It is a set that answers the "five moves" charge better than any promo did.

## WrestleMania XXX: the Lesnar match that is not about Cena

Lesnar's career ranking is the mirror of Cena's, and it holds two Cena matches — SummerSlam 2014 and Extreme Rules 2012.

Neither is the headline. On 6 April 2014 Lesnar ended The Undertaker's WrestleMania streak at 21-0,<a href="#src-4" id="ref-4">4</a> in a match nobody in the Superdome believed was going that way, and the crowd's reaction is still the most-quoted silence in the company's history.

Cena's presence twice on this list is the useful detail. Lesnar's best nights are mostly nights he beat somebody the company had spent years protecting, and Cena was the most protected of all of them.

## The F-5 against the Attitude Adjustment

John Cena and Brock Lesnar built careers on the same move. The Attitude Adjustment and the F-5 are both fireman's-carry slams; one drops the opponent flat, the other spins them off the shoulders first.

The difference is in how the company treated them. The F-5 ended matches on the first attempt for twenty years. The Attitude Adjustment was kicked out of constantly, because Cena's matches were built on comebacks and near-falls in a way Lesnar's were not.

The finisher ranking is where their move sits next to Steve Austin's Stunner, Randy Orton's RKO, Shawn Michaels' Sweet Chin Music and Bret Hart's Sharpshooter. A casual viewer can name all four.

## The Rock, The Undertaker and the part-time job Lesnar invented

Working twelve dates a year and still closing the show is a skill, and Lesnar is the man who proved it was possible at all.

From 2012 onwards he held the top championship on a schedule that would have got anyone else sent to the developmental system, and the company built its biggest cards around whether he would appear.

Cena joined the same category late and for a different reason. His schedule thinned out after 2017 as the film work took over, and by the end he was appearing to say goodbye rather than to compete.

The Rock left in 2004 and came back to headline WrestleMania. The Undertaker spent his last decade wrestling almost exclusively in April. Shawn Michaels worked a reduced schedule after his back injury and still had the best match on most cards he was on.

## Roman Reigns beat one of them and lost to the other

Roman Reigns has his own match ranking, and Cena and Lesnar are both in it as opponents.

Reigns beat Lesnar for the Universal Championship at SummerSlam 2018 after earlier attempts had failed, and he beat Cena at No Mercy 2017 in the match WWE used to signal the handover.

Two men, two ways of being the obstacle: Lesnar was the champion Reigns had to take the belt from, Cena was the star he had to be seen to beat.

## Elimination Chamber 2025: Cena's first heel turn in 22 years

In March 2025 Cena attacked Cody Rhodes at Elimination Chamber alongside Dwayne Johnson, and turned villain for the first time in 22 years. He then took the Undisputed WWE Championship off Rhodes in April, at WrestleMania 41, with a low blow and a belt shot, at Allegiant Stadium. It was his 17th world title, one clear of Ric Flair's 16.<a href="#src-2" id="ref-2">2</a>

Hulk Hogan forming the New World Order at Bash at the Beach in 1996 is the benchmark it gets measured against, and the two turns work the same way: a man the crowd trusted, doing the one thing it had ruled out.

Lesnar brings nothing to this list. There was no hero of his for a crowd to lose, and that is the condition the category runs on: the turn only counts if people were invested in the previous version.

## Peacemaker and The Suicide Squad: the list Lesnar cannot enter

Cena has a second career that Lesnar does not, and it is the widest gap between them anywhere on this page.

He went from Trainwreck in 2015 to Bumblebee and Blockers in 2018, then to Peacemaker in The Suicide Squad in 2021 and two seasons of his own HBO series.<a href="#src-9" id="ref-9">9</a> The comic timing was the surprise; the character work in Peacemaker was the part critics stopped hedging about.

Lesnar has no screen career at all. After the UFC he went back to a farm in Saskatchewan and came out for wrestling paydays, which is a coherent life and an empty column on this particular list.

Dwayne Johnson closes this conversation before it opens, and Dave Bautista owns the better dramatic filmography of the three. Andre the Giant played Fezzik in The Princess Bride, and plenty of people who quote that film have no idea he wrestled.

## Sheamus vs Cena, TLC 2009: the deep cut

Sheamus has a twenty-match career ranking on this site, and the first entry on it is the night he won the WWE Championship from Cena in a tables match at TLC in December 2009, six months into his main-roster run.

Cena being the answer inside another man's highlight reel is the most repeatable fact about him. He was the opponent who made other people's careers legible, which is a job Lesnar was never asked to do.

Lesnar is nowhere on this twenty-match list. He has no comparable run of nights spent making somebody else, and claiming one for him would be generous.

<figure class="ranking-shot">

## Bo Jackson, Jim Thorpe and the NCAA title Lesnar won first

Before any of the wrestling, Lesnar won the 2000 NCAA Division I heavyweight wrestling championship in his senior year, and in 2004 he walked out of WWE to try out for the Minnesota Vikings.<a href="#src-4" id="ref-4b">4</a>

The football attempt did not work. The point is that he kept making them, and the UFC one did.

Cena is not in this ranking, and the comparison is worth stating anyway: he was a college football player at Springfield who went into bodybuilding and then wrestling, and he never crossed back. Twenty-three years in one company is the opposite kind of career.

The field here is the real measure of Lesnar's version. Bo Jackson reached the MLB All-Star Game and the Pro Bowl in the same stretch of years. Jim Thorpe won Olympic gold in the decathlon and pentathlon in 1912 and then played professional baseball and football. Michael Jordan left basketball at his peak for the Birmingham Barons and came back to win three more titles.

## UFC 91: the belt only one of them has held

On 15 November 2008 in Las Vegas, in his fourth UFC fight, Lesnar stopped Randy Couture at 3:07 of the second round to win the UFC heavyweight championship.<a href="#src-5" id="ref-5">5</a> He is the only person to have held that title and the WWE Championship.<a href="#src-4" id="ref-4c">4</a>

Cena has no entry here and never claimed one. Nothing on Lesnar's side is harder to argue with, and it happened outside wrestling entirely.

The company Lesnar keeps on the list is what keeps it honest. Stipe Miocic held the heavyweight title twice and defended it against the best of his era, Jon Jones arrived from light heavyweight already regarded as the best fighter alive, and Randy Couture, the man Lesnar beat for the belt, was 45 years old that night.

## Two ways to spend twenty-three years

Cena's answer to the same starting point was to be there: reign after reign, a decade as the man the schedule was built around, and a body of work made mostly of other people's best nights. Lesnar's was to be unavailable and unbeatable, and to go and win a championship in a sport where the result was not written down first.

The fifteen lists above disagree for a plain reason: each measures something different. Every one of them gets <a href="/articles/what-is-pairwise-comparison">resolved in pairs</a>, which leaves the wording of the question doing most of the work.

Work through whichever of the fifteen interests you most. If neither man lands where you expected, make the list you think is missing.
