Suzanne Collins published The Hunger Games with Scholastic in 2008, and the five Panem novels now count more than 100 million copies in print and digital worldwide.1 The sixth film, *Sunrise on the Reaping*, premiered in London on October 28 and opens in US theaters on November 20, 2026, with Joseph Zada as the young Haymitch Abernathy and Ralph Fiennes as President Snow.2
A series that size spills far past the young-adult shelf. Twelve rankings follow: dystopian classics, deadly fictional contests, a cast list, and the careers of four Academy Award winners.
> The Hunger Games is the rare young-adult series that belongs in four Oscar winners' filmographies as comfortably as on a shelf of dystopian classics.
## The Hunger Games vs 1984: a 2008 novel among the dystopian classics
The 19 best dystopian novels of all time open with the canon: George Orwell's 1984 (1949), Aldous Huxley's Brave New World (1932), Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 and Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale.
The Hunger Games is one of four young-adult novels on that list, with The Giver, Divergent and The Maze Runner. Collins built hers from older material than any of them. In a Scholastic Q&A she named the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur as "a significant influence" and described the arena as an updated version of the Roman gladiator games.3 Panem itself takes its name from the Latin "panem et circenses", bread and circuses.
Orwell is the frame's opponent because both books run on surveillance. Big Brother watches Winston Smith; in Panem the whole country is required to watch.
The case against Collins is age. Huxley, Orwell and Bradbury have had seventy years of syllabi; Katniss Everdeen has had eighteen.

## The Hunger Games vs Twilight: two Lionsgate franchises now
The 33 best young adult novel film adaptations is where The Hunger Games meets the rest of the teen shelf: Twilight, Divergent, The Maze Runner, The Fault in Our Stars, Holes and The Outsiders.
Twilight is the natural opponent. Summit Entertainment opened Stephenie Meyer's vampire romance in November 2008, the year Collins' first novel came out, and Lionsgate bought Summit on January 13, 2012, for $412.5 million.4 Ten weeks later The Hunger Games reached theaters, so the decade's two biggest YA film series ended up under one corporate roof.
Gary Ross's 2012 film grossed $695 million worldwide on a $78 million budget.5
Harry Potter fans have a counter. The boy wizard reached cinemas in 2001, seven years before Katniss reached bookshops, and his first film competes here.

## Squid Game vs The Hunger Games: the reaping and the green tracksuits
The 19 deadliest games in fiction collects the contests where losing means dying, from Richard Connell's short story "The Most Dangerous Game" to Battle Royale, Stephen King's The Long Walk, Jigsaw's traps in Saw and the Triwizard Tournament.
Squid Game has the strongest recent claim. Hwang Dong-hyuk's 2021 Netflix series put 456 debt-ridden players into children's playground games for a 45.6 billion won prize.
The Hunger Games has the simplest rules on the list: 24 tributes, one boy and one girl from each of Panem's 12 districts, and one survivor. Its distinguishing feature is the audience. Squid Game hides its contest on a private island for a handful of masked VIPs. Collins makes the whole nation watch.
That compulsory audience is what Collins borrowed from Rome. The Capitol's viewers play the part of the crowd at the Colosseum, and the Games exist to remind the districts who won the last war.
Battle Royale readers have the counter. Koushun Takami's novel put a class of schoolchildren on an island to kill each other in 1999, nine years before Katniss volunteered.

## The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes vs Mockingjay – Part 2: the best Hunger Games movie
This ranking holds the five released films: The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Mockingjay – Part 1, Mockingjay – Part 2 and The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes.
Catching Fire is the box-office high point at $865 million worldwide. The 2023 prequel earned $349 million, the lowest of the five.5
The prequel has the better story case. Tom Blyth plays an 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow mentoring a District 12 tribute, and the film asks how a villain is made instead of how one is beaten.
Mockingjay – Part 2 is the ending, and endings carry weight in this kind of argument.

## Haymitch Abernathy vs Effie Trinket: the best Hunger Games character
Twenty-seven characters fill this ranking, from Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark to Rue, Finnick Odair, Cinna, Coriolanus Snow and Lucy Gray Baird.
Haymitch Abernathy gets the frame because November belongs to him. *Sunrise on the Reaping* tells how he won the 50th Games, the Second Quarter Quell, and Joseph Zada takes over the part Woody Harrelson played in the first four films.2
Effie Trinket is recast too, with Elle Fanning following Elizabeth Banks.

## Katniss Everdeen vs Ellen Ripley: the greatest female heroes in movie history
The 20 greatest female heroes in movie history runs from Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz to Furiosa, Sarah Connor, Princess Leia, Clarice Starling, The Bride and Evelyn Wang.
Ellen Ripley is the frame's opponent and the benchmark for every name here. Sigourney Weaver played her as the sole survivor of the Nostromo in Alien (1979) and brought her back for Aliens (1986).
Katniss Everdeen comes from a young-adult novel, as Hermione Granger does. Jennifer Lawrence played her in four films, from 2012 to Mockingjay – Part 2 in 2015.

## Mockingjay vs Divergent: the 2010s young-adult shelf
The 34 best young adult novels of the 2010s is a list Mockingjay barely qualifies for. Collins published it in 2010, the first year of the decade, and the series' first two books fall outside the range.
Veronica Roth's Divergent is the frame's opponent: the novel that most directly inherited Panem's readers, with five factions in place of twelve districts.
The rest of the list moved away from dystopia as the decade went on. The Fault in Our Stars, The Hate U Give, Six of Crows and Children of Blood and Bone are all here, and only a handful of the 34 put a teenager in a rebellion.

## Silver Linings Playbook vs Mockingjay: Jennifer Lawrence's split decade
The 18 greatest Jennifer Lawrence performances includes all four of her Hunger Games films next to Winter's Bone, American Hustle, mother! and Causeway.
Silver Linings Playbook is the obvious rival. It brought Lawrence the Best Actress Oscar in February 2013, eleven months after the first Hunger Games opened.6 For three years she made one prestige film and one Panem film a year.
The frame uses Mockingjay – Part 1, the entry where Katniss mostly performs for cameras. That is close to the job Lawrence was doing on the press tours, which makes it the most self-aware of her four.

## Mockingjay vs Deathly Hallows: the most unnecessary two-part finale
This is the list The Hunger Games would rather avoid. It asks which split finale least needed two films, and holds Mockingjay, the final Potter book's two films, Twilight's Breaking Dawn, Divergent's Allegiant, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning and the Avengers' Infinity War and Endgame.
Lionsgate announced on July 10, 2012, that Mockingjay would become two films.7 Part 1 spends much of its running time underground in District 13, waiting for the war to start.
The money argues both ways. Part 1 took $755 million and Part 2 $661 million, each below Catching Fire, though together they outearned any single entry.5
Deathly Hallows is the defence exhibit. Warner Bros. started the trend in 2010 with a book of more than 600 pages to cover.
Two books, four films, one question about padding. Play it →
## Capote vs Catching Fire: Philip Seymour Hoffman's Plutarch
The 24 best Philip Seymour Hoffman performances includes Capote, The Master, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Doubt and Almost Famous. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is there for Plutarch Heavensbee, the Head Gamemaker with a hidden agenda.
Capote earned Hoffman the Best Actor Oscar at the 2006 ceremony.8
Plutarch was the role he was still filming when he died. Hoffman died on February 2, 2014, during the Mockingjay shoot, after completing most of his scenes, and Part 1 is dedicated to his memory.7 Jesse Plemons plays a younger Plutarch in *Sunrise on the Reaping*.

## Still Alice vs Mockingjay: Julianne Moore as President Coin
The 23 greatest Julianne Moore performances runs through Safe, Boogie Nights, Far from Heaven, The Hours and Children of Men. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay is on it for Alma Coin, the District 13 president who turns out to want Snow's job.
Lionsgate cast Moore in September 2013 for both halves of the finale.7 Her Oscar came for Still Alice, at the 2015 ceremony held three months after Part 1 opened.9
Coin is a small part in a long career, and she is the character the books use to argue that the rebellion can produce its own Snow.

## Fences vs The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes: Viola Davis as the Gamemaker
The top 15 Viola Davis roles include Doubt, The Help, Widows, The Woman King, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and How to Get Away with Murder. The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is there for Dr. Volumnia Gaul, the Head Gamemaker who designs the 10th Games.
Fences gave Davis the supporting-actress Oscar in 2017.10 With her, all four competitive winners in this article have a Panem role on their own list.

## From Collins' bookshelf to the Academy's
Read the twelve sections together and the franchise splits in two: the books compete with Orwell and Roth, the films with the best work of Lawrence, Hoffman, Moore and Davis.
Each of these lists is [decided pair by pair](/articles/what-is-pairwise-comparison), whether the pair is two tributes or two of Orwell's heirs. Start with the reaping against Big Brother and see which way you lean.
