Madonna has sold more records than any other female artist in history, won a Golden Globe for *Evita*, and collected five Razzie awards for acting — more than any other performer. Guinness World Records has certified her as the best-selling female recording artist since 2009, at over 300 million records. That is a lot of different ways to measure one career. Below she turns up in 13 rankings, sometimes at the very top, sometimes nowhere near it, each one a different way of asking the same question: how good is Madonna, really?

## The broadest question in pop
"Best female music artist of all time" is the widest net you can throw over popular music, and Madonna's case for it is commercial before it is anything else.
Guinness World Records has held her as the best-selling female recording artist since 2009, with sales estimated between 300 and 400 million. Only The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson have conclusively sold more.
Beyoncé arrives with a different argument: 35 Grammy Awards, the most of any artist in the ceremony's history, and a run of albums that redefined what a pop release could be.
Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Taylor Swift are all in the same conversation, and each one shifts the criteria — vocal power, cultural reach, songwriting. The word "best" is doing an enormous amount of work here.

## Her own decade, on her own terms
Narrow the question to the 1980s and Madonna stops being one candidate among many. This is the decade she built.
*Like a Virgin* arrived in 1984 and sold around 22 million copies. *True Blue* followed in 1986 and sold roughly 25 million, topping the charts in 28 countries.
Cyndi Lauper is the rival most often named alongside her, and the case is real: *She's So Unusual* was the first debut album by a woman to produce four US top-five singles.
Whitney Houston, Tina Turner and Janet Jackson all belong on this list too, which is what makes the 1980s the most crowded decade in pop. Madonna's advantage is not one record but a five-year run of them.

## One song against the decade's best
Shrink the unit from a career to a single song and the ground shifts under Madonna immediately.
"Like a Prayer" is the track that carries her into this ranking. Released in 1989, it mixed a gospel choir with religious imagery, cost her a Pepsi sponsorship deal after the video aired, and is still the song critics reach for when they argue she is a serious artist.
Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" is the wall she meets. The 1983 single spent seven weeks at number one in the US and its video broke MTV's colour barrier.
Prince, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper and a-ha are all here with a signature song apiece. A great career counts for nothing in this format — only the three minutes do.

## A decade she survived rather than owned
Move the clock forward ten years and Madonna is no longer the obvious answer. The 1990s belonged to other people, and she spent the first half of them being written off.
*Erotica* and the *Sex* book, both released in 1992, drew the worst press of her career. *Ray of Light* in 1998, produced with William Orbit, won four Grammy Awards and reversed the verdict almost entirely.
Kurt Cobain is the name that dominates any 90s influence ranking. Nirvana's *Nevermind* displaced Michael Jackson from the top of the US chart in January 1992 and took guitar music with it.
Dr. Dre, Lauryn Hill, Radiohead and TLC each reshaped a genre in the same decade. Madonna's claim is reinvention rather than invention — she is on this list because she got out of the 1980s alive.

## Where it all started
This ranking judges first albums only, which puts Madonna's 1983 debut up against records made by artists who had studied her.
*Madonna* was a synth-pop album built in New York clubs, and it produced "Holiday", "Borderline" and "Lucky Star". It sold around 10 million copies — modest next to what came after, enormous for a debut nobody expected.
Taylor Swift's self-titled 2006 debut is the direct challenger: a country record written largely by a teenager, and the first step of the most commercially dominant career of the last two decades.
Whitney Houston's 1985 debut, Alicia Keys' *Songs in A Minor* and Britney Spears' *…Baby One More Time* fill out a list where the question is not how good the artist became, but how much was already there on day one.

## Twelve minutes in Indianapolis
The Super Bowl halftime show is the largest stage in music, and Madonna took it on 5 February 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
Her set drew 114 million viewers — at the time the most-watched halftime show ever, and about three million more people than the game it interrupted, which pulled 111.3 million.
The staging was Roman-gladiator spectacle with M.I.A., Nicki Minaj, LMFAO and Cee Lo Green cycling through in twelve minutes.
Prince's 2007 set is the one that haunts this ranking. He played "Purple Rain" in actual rain on a stage shaped like his own symbol, and most critics have called it untouchable ever since.

## The newest record on this page
*Confessions II* arrived on 3 July 2026, which makes it the freshest thing in this article by some distance.
Madonna built it as a direct sequel to *Confessions on a Dance Floor*, reuniting with producer Stuart Price twenty-one years after the original. The lead single, "Bring Your Love", is a duet with Sabrina Carpenter; her daughter Lourdes sings on a track called "The Test". Variety called it her best album in decades.
Tina Turner's *Private Dancer* is the comeback record everything else is measured against. Released in 1984 after she left a ruined career behind, it sold more than 20 million copies and won three Grammys.
Cher's *Believe*, ABBA's *Voyage* and Johnny Cash's *American Recordings* each solved the same problem a different way. A comeback is the one thing an artist can only attempt once the world has stopped paying attention.

## Madonna against Madonna
Turn the lens inward and the competition disappears. Every option in this ranking is a Madonna album, so the only thing being tested is which version of her a listener prefers.
*Ray of Light* is the critics' answer. The 1998 record she made with William Orbit pulled ambient and electronica into mainstream pop and won four Grammy Awards.
*Confessions on a Dance Floor* is the dancefloor answer. Released in 2005 and mixed as one continuous set, it gave her "Hung Up" and the Abba sample she waited months for permission to use.
*Like a Virgin*, *True Blue* and *Erotica* pull the argument in three more directions. Fourteen studio albums in, the question stops being about quality and starts being about which decade a listener grew up in.

## The same trick, in video
Madonna's videos are ranked separately from her songs for a reason: through the 1980s and 1990s she treated MTV as a medium rather than a promotional channel.
"Vogue" is the one most often called her best. David Fincher directed it in 1990 in black and white, borrowing from Old Hollywood portraiture and pulling ballroom voguing from Harlem clubs into the mainstream.
"Material Girl" works the same seam five years earlier, restaging Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend" almost shot for shot.
"Like a Prayer", "Express Yourself" and "Justify My Love" complete a run that MTV built its first decade around — one of them banned by the channel, which did the song no harm at all.

## The role that silenced the critics
Madonna spent a decade being told she could not act, and then made *Evita*.
Alan Parker's 1996 adaptation cast her as Eva Perón and required
her to record the entire score; she won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for it, and the film took the Academy Award for Best Original Song with "You Must Love Me".
Judy Garland's Dorothy is the standard this ranking is really about. *The Wizard of Oz* was released in 1939, and "Over the Rainbow" has topped more than one poll of the greatest film songs ever written.
Liza Minnelli, Barbra Streisand, Julie Andrews and Rami Malek fill the rest of a list where singing and acting have to arrive in the same performance. It is the only screen ranking here where Madonna's presence needs no explanation.

## One night on a staircase
The Met Gala ranking has nothing to do with music at all, which is exactly why Madonna belongs in it.
Her 2009 appearance in a Louis Vuitton tartan ensemble is the entry here — punk provocation on the most tightly controlled red carpet in fashion, from a performer who had already spent 25 years testing what an audience would tolerate.
Princess Diana's 1996 Dior slip dress is the opposite argument. She wore it to her only Met Gala, months after her divorce, and the photographs ran on front pages worldwide.
Cher, Beyoncé, Zendaya and Lady Gaga round out a ranking judged on a single evening's clothes. Career length is worth nothing here, which is why it is one of the strangest lists Madonna turns up in.

## A festival crowd is a different animal
Coachella rewards a particular kind of act, and a 40-year pop catalogue is not obviously it.
Madonna's most recent appearance at the festival was as a guest rather than a headliner: on 18 April 2026 she joined Sabrina Carpenter during Carpenter's Weekend 2 headline set for "Vogue", "Like a Prayer" and the first live airing of "Bring Your Love". Madonna told the crowd she had first played Coachella twenty years earlier, calling it a full-circle moment.
Daft Punk's 2006 set is the one this ranking exists to argue about. The French duo played inside a glowing pyramid and effectively invented what a modern festival headline set looks like.
Beyoncé's 2018 performance, Radiohead, Kendrick Lamar and Björk are all here too. Against that company, a guest spot is a footnote — and this is the list where Madonna has the least to stand on.

## The list nobody wants to lead
Every article like this needs one ranking the subject would rather not appear in. For Madonna it is this one, and she has the paperwork to prove she belongs.
She has won five Golden Raspberry awards for acting, more than any other performer. *Shanghai Surprise* took Worst Actress for 1986, *Who's That Girl* did the same the following year, and *Swept Away* collected another in 2002. In 1992 she was even nominated for playing herself in the documentary *Truth or Dare*.
Vanilla Ice is the closest competition. *Cool as Ice*, his 1991 starring vehicle, is still the reference point for a rapper's film career going wrong.
Mariah Carey's *Glitter*, Britney Spears in *Crossroads* and Prince's Razzie for *Under the Cherry Moon* keep the standard high. The joke only works because everyone on this list is genuinely great at the other thing.
