# Beyoncé Doesn't Rank the Same Way Twice
> Beyoncé turns up in 16 rankings — pop albums, Super Bowl halftime, Coachella, Met Gala looks, music documentaries and Destiny's Child. Each asks something different.

Beyoncé has 35 Grammys, the most anyone has ever won. She also lost Album of the Year four times before *Cowboy Carter* finally took it in February 2025. She has a country record, a disco record, a stadium tour that grossed $579 million, a Netflix documentary, a Met Gala archive and a girl group that sold more than 60 million records before she was 25.
On 4 July 2026 she released "MORNING DEW (DONK)", her first new song in two years, starting a 60-day countdown to the 20th-anniversary reissue of *B'Day* on 4 September. Which makes this a good moment to ask where she actually belongs. Below she turns up in 16 rankings — sometimes as the obvious answer, sometimes as one name in a very crowded room.

## The list everybody starts with
"Who is the best female pop star?" is the broadest question you can ask about Beyoncé, and it is the one where her case needs the least explaining. Four solo studio albums since 2013 have arrived as events rather than releases, and two of her tours have passed $400 million.
The problem with a broad question is a broad field. This ranking holds 32 names, from Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey to Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo.
Madonna is on it too, which is the more interesting comparison. She built the template — the reinvention, the tour as spectacle, the controlled provocation — and Beyoncé has spent two decades doing it at a larger scale.

## Take away the genre and the decade
Drop "pop" from the question and Beyoncé is competing across a century. "Who is the best American singer?" puts her in a field of 32 that includes Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Ray Charles and Michael Jackson.
Her qualification here is not chart position but range. *Cowboy Carter* won Best Country Album at the 2025 Grammys, *Renaissance* is a house record, and *Lemonade* moves through rock, country and R&B in twelve tracks.
Aretha Franklin is the hardest name on the list to argue past. "Respect" and *I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You* did the work of establishing what a soul vocal could be, and Beyoncé has covered her repeatedly and publicly.
That is the honest shape of this section: she has a real case, and it is a case among fifteen or twenty other real cases.

## Judged as a piece of construction
*Lemonade* arrived in April 2016 as an hour-long film on HBO before it was an album anyone could buy. Twelve chapters, titled from "Intuition" to "Redemption", tracking infidelity through to reconciliation.
That structure is why it belongs on a list of concept albums rather than just good albums — and why this is the hardest room in the article.
The competition here is not pop at all. It is *Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band*, Pink Floyd's *The Wall*, David Bowie's *Ziggy Stardust*, The Who's *Tommy* and Green Day's *American Idiot*: five records that between them defined what "concept album" means, four of them released before Beyoncé was born.
A 2016 album on that list is the newcomer by four decades. The counter-argument is that *Lemonade* is the only one that had to work as a film and a record at the same time.

## The decade where she meets herself
Narrow the question to one decade and Beyoncé appears twice. Both *Lemonade* (2016) and the surprise-released *BEYONCÉ* (2013) are options in the best pop album of the 2010s, which means the strongest argument against either record is the other one.
The other name on this list with a claim on the same decade is Adele. *25* sold faster than anything else released in 2015, and at the 2017 Grammys it beat *Lemonade* to Album of the Year.
Adele's response to winning is the reason people still bring it up. She said on stage that she "can't possibly accept this award", called *Lemonade* monumental, and told Beyoncé she was "our light".
Nine years on, that is still the matchup this section is about — and the loser of it is now the artist with the most Grammys ever won.

## Two acts of an unfinished trilogy
Beyoncé's 2020s are two albums that share a project and almost nothing else. *Renaissance* (2022) is a house and disco record built on Black club history; *Cowboy Carter* (2024) is a country album that won Best Country Album at the 2025 Grammys and made her the first Black woman to take that category.
Both are options in the best pop album of the 2020s so far, which is a strange kind of self-competition: one record is for dancing at four in the morning, the other has a banjo on it.
The third act has never been officially announced. *Renaissance* landed in 2022 and *Cowboy Carter* in 2024, and the two-year gap is the only evidence anyone has.
The list they sit on holds Dua Lipa's *Future Nostalgia*, Taylor Swift's *Midnights*, Billie Eilish's *Hit Me Hard and Soft* and Harry Styles' *Harry's House* — the album that beat *Renaissance* to Album of the Year in 2023.

## Four records, one list
The best R&B-pop crossover album is the ranking where Beyoncé's footprint is widest: *Dangerously in Love*, *B'Day*, *Lemonade* and Destiny's Child's *Survivor* are all options in the same field of 21.
*Dangerously in Love* is the one that started it. Released in June 2003 while Destiny's Child were still officially together, it produced "Crazy in Love" and "Baby Boy" and made the solo career non-negotiable.
Alicia Keys' *Songs in A Minor* is the closest thing to a direct rival. It arrived two years earlier, sold on classical piano and neo-soul rather than on production, and set the terms Beyoncé's debut then had to beat.
Above both of them sits *Thriller*, which is on this list as well, and which nothing in R&B or pop has out-sold since 1982.

## Thirteen minutes in New Orleans
The Super Bowl halftime show gives an artist about thirteen minutes and the largest live audience in American television. Beyoncé took hers at Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans in February 2013 and used part of it to bring Destiny's Child back on stage.
It is the performance most often named when people argue that the modern halftime show is a production rather than a concert.
Michael Jackson's 1993 show is the reason the slot matters at all. Before it, halftime was marching bands and novelty acts; after it, the NFL started booking the biggest artist available, which is the tradition Beyoncé inherited.
Prince playing "Purple Rain" in actual rain in 2007 is the other performance nobody has got past. This list also holds Madonna 2012, Lady Gaga 2017, Rihanna 2023 and Bad Bunny 2026.

## The set that got the festival renamed
On 14 April 2018 Beyoncé became the first Black woman to headline Coachella in the festival's nineteen-year history. She said so from the stage. The two-hour show was built around a marching band and the visual language of a historically Black college homecoming, and it included another Destiny's Child reunion.
People started calling the weekend Beychella, and the name stuck well enough that it is how the set is usually referred to now.
This is the ranking where her case is at its most straightforward. Coachella is a festival with a specific problem — enormous crowds, short sets, artists who play the same show they played the night before — and a two-hour piece of staged choreography is not what the format normally produces.

## Five nights out of sixteen
The BET Awards ranking is the one where Beyoncé's problem is Beyoncé. Five of its sixteen options involve her: her 2003 solo debut performing "Crazy in Love", the 2004 duet with Usher, the 2006 set with Jay-Z, a 2007 performance, and Destiny's Child in 2005.
The 2003 appearance is the one that reads as a turning point. *Dangerously in Love* was weeks old, the group had not formally split, and she went out alone.
Destiny's Child in 2005 was the opposite kind of night. They performed "Cater 2 U" a few months before announcing the end of the group, which makes it a farewell in retrospect rather than at the time.
The rest of the list is Whitney Houston in 2001, James Brown in 2003, The Fugees, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar and the 2016 Prince tribute.

## The whole show, not one night
A single performance is one question. "Which pop star has the best concert experience?" is a different one — it asks about the product, night after night, across a whole tour.
Beyoncé has the numbers for it. The Renaissance World Tour grossed $579 million across 56 shows in 2023, and the Cowboy Carter Tour took $407.6 million from just 32 dates in nine cities in 2025, making her the first American artist with two tours past $400 million.
Taylor Swift is the obvious counter-argument and a genuinely different proposition: three and a half hours, a set list drawn from ten albums, and an audience that treats attendance as participation.
The list also holds Bruce Springsteen and Paul McCartney, both of whom have been doing this since before either of them was born.

## A list with no music on it
The most iconic Met Gala look of all time is a ranking about clothes, photographers and one flight of steps. Beyoncé's entry is the custom sheer Givenchy gown she wore in 2015, crystal-embroidered and close to transparent.
She earns a place here on volume as much as on any single dress. She has been going since the mid-2000s, and the 2016 latex Givenchy look is on the site's other Met Gala list.
Rihanna's 2018 Maison Margiela papal look is the hardest one to get past. It required around 500 hours of hand embroidery and it turned a costume theme into an argument about religious imagery that ran for weeks.

## The same question, narrowed to one night
The all-time Met Gala list rewards twenty years of appearances. Narrow it to a single evening and the advantage disappears: at the 2026 gala Beyoncé was one of eleven names in a field where nobody had a back catalogue of red carpets to draw on.
She arrived in a skeletal crystal gown with a feathered wrap, and brought her daughter Blue Ivy in white.
Zoë Kravitz in sheer black Saint Laurent lace is the kind of option that beats a bigger name on a one-night list, because the question stops being who has the better archive and becomes who wore the better dress in May 2026.

## Where the run stops
*Homecoming* is Beyoncé's 2019 Netflix documentary about building the Coachella set: eight months of rehearsal, a hundred-odd musicians and dancers, and a director credit for her.
On a list of the best music documentaries it is a long way from home. The competition is not other pop films — it is *Woodstock*, *Gimme Shelter*, *The Last Waltz*, *Don't Look Back*, *Amy* and *Summer of Soul*, most of them made by directors whose reputations rest on this one genre.
Jonathan Demme's *Stop Making Sense* is the specific problem. Shot across three Talking Heads nights in 1983, it is the film most critics reach for when asked what the best concert movie is, and A24 re-released it in 4K for its fortieth anniversary.
*Homecoming* has one advantage none of them do: the artist controlled the show, the film and the edit.

## Her first act, on the hardest list in the article
Destiny's Child sold more than 60 million records, and in 2005 the World Music Awards named them the best-selling female group of all time. On a list of the greatest pop bands, that is nowhere near enough.
The field is ABBA, The Beatles, the Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac and The Jackson 5, plus every boy band and girl group of the last thirty years.
ABBA are the tidiest problem. Four number ones, "Dancing Queen", a catalogue that turned into two films and a stage show still running, and a hologram residency selling tickets fifty years after Eurovision.
The Beatles are a different order of problem entirely.
Destiny's Child's own case is that no girl group has matched "Say My Name", "Survivor" and "Independent Women Part I" inside three years — and that one of its members went on to the career this article is about.

## Give the group its own question
Remove the other bands and Destiny's Child gets 26 options of its own. This is the ranking that covers Beyoncé's first eight years, from "No, No, No" in 1997 through to *Destiny Fulfilled* in 2004.
"Say My Name" is the song that usually opens the argument. It won a Grammy, it came off *The Writing's on the Wall* in 1999, and its video introduced the three-member line-up that people picture when they picture the group.
"Independent Women Part I" is the commercial answer. Written for the *Charlie's Angels* soundtrack in 2000, it spent eleven weeks at number one on the Hot 100 — longer than anything else the group released.
"Survivor", "Bootylicious" and "Bills, Bills, Bills" are all here too, which is a reminder that the run was three years long and produced roughly a hit a quarter.

## Eight albums, no outside help
The last question is the narrowest and the hardest to duck. Eight solo albums, no other artist to compare against, no era or genre to hide behind: *Dangerously in Love*, *B'Day*, *I Am… Sasha Fierce*, *4*, *BEYONCÉ*, *Lemonade*, *Renaissance* and *Cowboy Carter*.
*Lemonade* is the critical answer and *Cowboy Carter* is the one the Recording Academy finally agreed with, after passing on *I Am… Sasha Fierce* in 2010, *BEYONCÉ* in 2015, *Lemonade* in 2017 and *Renaissance* in 2023.
*B'Day* is the interesting outsider, and the reason this article exists now. Recorded in three weeks in 2006 and released on her birthday, it turns twenty on 4 September 2026 and gets a reissue that day — which is what "MORNING DEW (DONK)" was counting down to.
Twenty years and eight albums later, the answer to "which one is best" still depends entirely on who you ask.

## Sixteen lists, sixteen different Beyoncés
Ask about pop stardom and she is one of the two or three names the question was written for. Ask about concept albums and she is the newcomer among records made before she was born. Ask about music documentaries and she is up against *Woodstock*. Ask about pop bands and her first group is standing next to The Beatles.
