# Batman vs Superman: Who Is the Better Hero? 14 Lists

Batman and Superman are the two oldest arguments in American comics, eleven months apart in print and never out of it since. The next round is already dated. James Gunn wrapped *Man of Tomorrow* on 26 August 2026, and Warner Bros. has it in cinemas on 9 July 2027.1 *The Batman: Part II* now opens on 18 February 2028, after Matt Reeves asked for more post-production time.2
So Superman gets to the screen first again. The fourteen rankings below put the two characters, their films, their villains, their music and their worst mistakes on the same lists.

## Batman vs Spider-Man and Iron Man: the greatest superhero of all time
This ranking asks the widest question in the genre, and it puts Batman and Superman against sixteen other heroes from DC, Marvel, Dark Horse and Image.
Superman's case is chronology. Every hero on the list, from Wonder Woman to Deadpool, works inside the template Action Comics set in 1938: a costume, a secret identity, a power the rest of us lack.
Batman's case is the opposite. He has no power at all, and he still stands next to a god of thunder and a Kryptonian.
Marvel supplies the pressure. Spider-Man, Iron Man and Wolverine carried much of the genre's box office after 2000, and for many younger fans Tony Stark is the face of it.

## Superman vs Batman inside DC's own house
Narrow the field to one publisher and the pair become the two founding members of the Justice League rather than two entries among many.
Superman arrived first and gave DC its business. Batman arrived a year later, in an anthology called *Detective Comics*, and became the second pillar the company still stands on.

## Christopher Reeve vs Michael Keaton, with Robert Downey Jr. in the way
The best superhero actors ranking holds eighteen names, and the two men who first made these characters work on film are both on it.
Christopher Reeve played Superman four times between 1978 and 1987. Richard Donner's film sold itself on the promise that audiences would believe a man can fly, and the Academy gave it a Special Achievement Award for visual effects.3
Michael Keaton was the risk. Warner Bros. cast a comedian for *Batman* in 1989, fans protested, and he came back to the role in *The Flash* in 2023.
Robert Downey Jr. is the obstacle for both. Eleven years as Tony Stark gave the Marvel films a lead that neither DC franchise has matched since, and Christian Bale, Henry Cavill and Robert Pattinson split the DC side between them.

## The Dark Knight vs Superman (2025): four decades of DC films
This list covers twenty DC films from 1978 to 2025, and eleven of them feature Batman, Superman or both.
The Batman side is deep: Tim Burton's two films, Christopher Nolan's trilogy, Matt Reeves's *The Batman* and *Joker*, which has no Batman at all but lives in his city. *The Dark Knight* is the one that won Heath Ledger his Oscar.
The Superman side is older and thinner. Donner's 1978 film, *Superman II*, Snyder's 2013 reboot and Gunn's 2025 one are the whole case.
Wonder Woman, Watchmen and V for Vendetta are the reminder that DC's best films are not all about these two.

## Superman II vs Batman Returns: two sequels, two different rules
*Superman II* set a pattern many superhero sequels still follow: the hero gives up his powers, the villains are three Kryptonians, and the stakes get bigger.
*Batman Returns* went the other way in 1992. Tim Burton made a stranger, darker film than his first, with Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman and Danny DeVito's Penguin.
Both sit on a list that *The Dark Knight*, *Spider-Man 2* and *Avengers: Endgame* all claim. Batman has two entries here, Superman one.

## John Williams vs Danny Elfman: the Superman march and the Batman waltz
The best superhero movie themes ranking holds fifteen scores, and two of them set the sound of these characters.
John Williams wrote the Superman march in 1978, a year after *Star Wars*, and the score earned him an Oscar nomination.3 Gunn's 2025 film brought the fanfare back, which says how hard it has been to replace.
Danny Elfman's Batman theme for Burton is a darker thing, closer to a gothic waltz than a march. Three years later a variation of it opened the animated series, so a generation heard it on weekday afternoons.
The modern challengers are Alan Silvestri's Avengers theme, Ludwig Göransson's Black Panther and the two-note drone Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard wrote for Nolan.

## Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the DC Extended Universe
The DC Extended Universe is the only film series built on the premise of this article. Zack Snyder's *Man of Steel* launched it in 2013, and three years later Snyder put both heroes in one title.
*Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice* grossed $874,362,803 worldwide and opened to $166 million in North America, according to Box Office Mojo.4 Audiences still argue about the scene where the fight stops because both mothers are called Martha.
Wonder Woman made her film debut in that same picture, and her own 2017 film is the challenger to both. Batman never got a solo film in this universe.

## The Joker vs General Zod: four villains against one
The best superhero movie villains ranking has fourteen names, and it shows the biggest gap between the two characters in this article.
Batman brings four: Heath Ledger's Joker, the Riddler, Two-Face and Bane, all from his own films.
Superman brings one. General Zod, played by Terence Stamp in *Superman II* and Michael Shannon in *Man of Steel*, is the only Superman villain here, and Lex Luthor is missing.

## Gotham City vs Metropolis: New York at night and by day
The fictional cities ranking puts Gotham and Metropolis against Wakanda, Mega-City One, Springfield and Coruscant.
Both are New York. Washington Irving attached the name Gotham to the city in 1807, and Gotham was first named as Batman's home in *Batman* #4 in 1940. Dennis O'Neil, who edited the Batman titles, described it as "Manhattan below 14th Street at eleven minutes past midnight on the coldest night in November."5
Superman's Metropolis is the same island in daylight, with the Daily Planet globe on the skyline.
The difference is who you would rather live with. Gotham has the better architecture and the higher murder rate; Metropolis has the better commute.

## Batman: The Animated Series vs Superman: The Animated Series
These two cartoons were made by the same people, Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Alan Burnett, four years apart.
*Batman: The Animated Series* premiered on Fox Kids on 5 September 1992 and ran 85 episodes. Its backgrounds were painted on black paper, a style the crew called "Dark Deco", and in 1993 it took the Primetime Emmy for animated programs.6 Kevin Conroy's Batman and Mark Hamill's Joker became the voices many fans still hear when they read the comics.
*Superman: The Animated Series* followed on 6 September 1996 and ran 54 episodes to 2000.7 It modernised Superman's comic-book mythos and set up the shared DC Animated Universe that *Justice League* grew out of.

## The Bat-Symbol vs the S-Shield
Two shapes that people recognise without ever opening a comic: a black bat and a red letter in a diamond.
Superman's S-Shield has been redrawn for every film since 1978 and later stories made it the crest of the House of El. Batman's bat also works as a light in the sky over Gotham, the one logo on this list with a job inside the story.

## Action Comics #1 vs Detective Comics #27
The most important comic book issues ranking starts with these two, because nearly everything else on it depends on them.
*Action Comics* #1 went on sale on 18 April 1938 with Superman lifting a car on the cover. In January 2026 a copy graded 9.0 sold privately for $15 million, the highest price paid for a comic book.8
*Detective Comics* #27 followed on 30 March 1939, with Bob Kane and Bill Finger's "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate".9 Batman was DC's answer to the demand Superman had created.
Further down are the issues where the medium changed direction: *Amazing Fantasy* #15, *Fantastic Four* #1, *Watchmen* and Frank Miller's *The Dark Knight Returns*, which ends with Batman beating Superman in a fight.

## Batman & Robin vs Superman IV: the films that stopped each franchise
Both characters have a film that ended their series for years, and both are on the worst superhero movies ranking.
*Superman IV: The Quest for Peace* came out in July 1987 after Cannon Films, in financial trouble, cut its budget from $36 million to $17 million. It was Christopher Reeve's last time in the suit, and the series went dormant for 19 years. Reeve called it "a catastrophe from start to finish."10
*Batman & Robin* followed in June 1997. Joel Schumacher later said, "I want to apologize to every fan that was disappointed," and the next Batman film, *Batman Begins*, arrived eight years later.11
Catwoman, Morbius and Madame Web are the competition, and *Batman v Superman* appears here as well, a sign of how split its audience remains.

## Superman 64 vs Batman: Dark Tomorrow
The worst superhero video games ranking is where Superman has a record of his own.
*Superman 64*, released by Titus in 1999, sends the player flying through rings in a green fog. It holds the Guinness record for the lowest-rated superhero game, with an aggregate of 22.9% on GameRankings, and it still sold more than 500,000 copies.12
*Batman: Dark Tomorrow* is Batman's entry. Kemco's 2003 game scored 29 on Metacritic for GameCube and 25 for Xbox, and its good ending is hidden with no hint in the game.13
On the good lists the gap reverses. Batman also has Rocksteady's Arkham games, and *Arkham City* is an option in the greatest Xbox 360 games ranking. Superman has no game there.
