# Anderson Silva: Six Years Champion, One Left Hook

On 15 August 2026, Islam Makhachev beat Ian Machado Garry by unanimous decision in Philadelphia and took the one Anderson Silva record everybody could quote: sixteen straight wins inside the Octagon.1 Silva had held it for fourteen years. He is 51, retired from mixed martial arts since March 2026, and currently training toward a job with the Beverly Hills police department.2
The record nobody has touched is the other one. He was UFC middleweight champion for more than six years, defended the belt ten times, and then a left hook in Las Vegas ended it. Everything after that ran the opposite way.

## Anderson Silva vs Stipe Miocic: the all-time list nobody settles
Every promotion has one of these rankings, and the UFC's runs 32 names deep. Silva belongs there on the arithmetic alone: 34 wins, 22 of them by knockout, and a Hall of Fame induction in the class of 2023.4
The trouble is that "best ever" rewards different things depending on who is counting. Jon Jones and Georges St-Pierre never lost a division. Khabib Nurmagomedov retired unbeaten. Stipe Miocic won the heaviest belt three separate times.
Silva's case rests on a stretch rather than a whole career. Between 2006 and 2013 nobody in the sport looked as far ahead of the field. The seven years after that keep this ranking unsettled.

## Silva vs Israel Adesanya: the middleweight question
Narrow the field to one division and it shrinks to ten names. This is the ranking where Silva's case is at its strongest, because the two things that decide it are both his: the length of the reign and the quality of what he beat during it.
Israel Adesanya is the closest comparison, another striker who ran the division from range and took it back after losing it. Robert Whittaker, Chris Weidman and Michael Bisping all held the same belt.
Rich Franklin is the name most fans skip, and he is the reason the list has a shape at all. Franklin was the champion Silva took it from in 2006, and the man who lost the belt is on the list of men who held it.

## Anderson Silva vs Demetrious Johnson: 2,457 days against 2,142
Guinness World Records has this one closed. Silva held the middleweight title from 14 October 2006 to 6 July 2013, six years and 265 days, with ten defences inside that stretch.3
Demetrious Johnson is second on the UFC's own list at 2,142 days, with eleven defences of the flyweight belt. St-Pierre is third at 2,064. Jon Jones is eighth.5
Eleven names make the list, so three and a half years as champion is enough to qualify. Silva's reign was nearly twice that.

## Chuck Liddell, Cro Cop and what counts as striking
Silva's reputation was built on hitting people who could not hit him back, which is a different skill from hitting hard. He fought going backwards, invited the exchange, and finished 22 of his 34 wins by knockout.4
Chuck Liddell is the counter-case on the same list. The Iceman's looping overhand right sold the UFC to American television in the mid-2000s, and it worked because it was one punch thrown with total conviction.

## UFC 126: the front kick that should not have worked
On 5 February 2011 Silva threw a front kick at Vitor Belfort's chin, a technique that belongs in a karate class rather than a championship round, and it ended the fight at 3:25 of the first.6
It is on this list against finishes with better claims to spectacle. Jorge Masvidal's flying knee took five seconds against Ben Askren at UFC 239, the fastest finish the company has recorded. Conor McGregor needed thirteen seconds and one left hand to take José Aldo's belt.
What keeps the Belfort kick in the conversation is that it was a decision rather than an accident. Silva had shown the same kick in training footage, and then used it on a former champion in a title fight.
Edson Barboza's wheel kick on Terry Etim and Leon Edwards' head kick with 56 seconds left against Kamaru Usman are the other two entries built on someone doing the technically absurd thing on purpose.
Belfort had won a UFC tournament at 19 and knocked out champions in three decades, so this was not a novice walking into a trick. Fifteen years later the kick is still the first clip in every highlight package about Silva, which is the argument for putting it above finishes that were faster.

## UFC 117: the striker on a list of submissions
Chael Sonnen out-wrestled Silva for four rounds and most of the fifth on 7 August 2010. At 3:10 of the last round Silva caught him in a triangle choke from his back and the fight was over.6
The UFC put that fight into its Hall of Fame Fight Wing, which is the promotion's way of saying the twenty-three minutes before the finish were as important as the finish.4
Royce Gracie's win over Ken Shamrock qualifies too, and so does Rousimar Palhares needing thirty-one seconds on Mike Pierce.

## Silva vs Sonnen: the feud that carried a division
Sonnen spent two years insulting Silva, his country and his teammates in interviews that were better attended than most fights. It sold UFC 148 in 2012, where Silva finished him with knees to the body in the second round.6
Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier are the usual answer here, and they have a press-conference brawl on the record to prove it. Khabib against McGregor sold more pay-per-views than anything the company has done.
The Silva entry is the one where the talking was entirely one-sided. Silva barely responded in public, which left Sonnen performing a rivalry to an empty chair for two years and made the eventual finishes land harder.

## Bisping in London, Sonnen in Oakland: Silva against himself
Eleven Silva fights, judged against each other. It is the one ranking here whose options are all his, which turns the usual question inside out.
The Sonnen fight has the drama. The Belfort kick has the highlight. His debut against Chris Leben in 2006 took 49 seconds and told the division what had arrived.
Then there is London in 2016, a decision loss to Michael Bisping remembered almost entirely for the flying knee Silva landed at the end of the third round while Bisping's mouthpiece was on the canvas. Silva was 41 and no longer champion, and it is still one of the most argued-about rounds of his career.

## Silva vs Lyoto Machida: Brazil's deepest bracket
Brazil has produced more elite mixed martial artists than any country except the United States, and the list of sixteen still leaves people out. Royce Gracie brought the family's jiu-jitsu to the first UFC tournaments. Amanda Nunes held two belts at once. José Aldo went a decade without losing.
Lyoto Machida is the nearest stylistic match. Both fought from the outside, both came from a striking art the sport had not seen much of, and Machida's own unbeaten run reached 16 fights before it ended.
Silva's claim on this particular list is the one that needs the least explaining. Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, Maurício Rua and Wanderlei Silva made PRIDE a Brazilian promotion in everything but address, and then Silva did the same thing to the UFC's best division for six years.

## Pelé, Senna and the company Silva keeps
Ask the same question about Brazilian sport as a whole and Silva becomes one name among nineteen. Pelé won three World Cups. Ayrton Senna won three drivers' titles before Imola. Marta has more World Cup goals than any footballer of either gender.
The list also holds people most readers outside Brazil will not know. Oscar Schmidt outscored every player competitive basketball has recorded, without playing a single NBA game. Adhemar da Silva won triple jump gold at two Olympics and broke the world record five times.
Here the article's subject is the small name, and that is worth saying plainly. In a country whose national sport produced Garrincha, Romário and Ronaldinho, a fighter competes for attention rather than for the top of any list.

## Sonny Liston and being feared for a living
Fifteen athletes qualify for this one, and the qualification is what opponents said before the fight rather than anything that happened in it. Silva's version was psychological: he made ranked middleweights fight tentatively, then punished the hesitation.
Sonny Liston did it with a stare that half the heavyweight division talked about for a decade. Mike Tyson did it in the ring walk.
The list stretches well past combat sports. Lawrence Taylor, Dick Butkus and Ray Lewis are there from the NFL, Nolan Ryan and Bob Gibson from baseball, Roy Keane from football. Few rankings in this article measure Silva against people who never threw a punch professionally.

## George Foreman at 45, Anderson Silva at 50
On 19 December 2025, on the undercard of Jake Paul against Anthony Joshua in Miami, Silva stopped Tyron Woodley at 1:33 of the second round. He was 50 years old.7
George Foreman is the ceiling here. He won the heavyweight title back at 45, twenty years after losing it in Kinshasa, and Bernard Hopkins won a world title at 49.
Randy Couture took the UFC heavyweight belt at 43 and Glover Teixeira won at light heavyweight at 42, which are the two entries that make this a mixed martial arts list rather than a boxing one.
Silva's entry is the odd one because it is not a title. It is a man three months short of 51 finishing a former UFC champion on a Netflix card, three months before announcing he was done with the sport that made him.

## Jake Paul's best night came against him
Nine Jake Paul fights make this ranking, and Silva is an entry on it as an opponent. On 29 October 2022 Paul beat him over eight rounds by unanimous decision, which remains the win that did most for Paul's credibility as a boxer.6
Silva went into it 4-1 as a professional boxer, including a split-decision win over Julio César Chávez Jr. the year before.6
Being the best line on someone else's résumé is a particular kind of ranking to appear on. Paul's list also holds Mike Tyson, Nate Diaz, Ben Askren and the Anthony Joshua fight he lost in December 2025.

## UFC 162: the left hook that ended the reign
Twelve upsets make this list, and Silva's name appears in the middle of somebody else's. The entry reads "Chris Weidman beats Anderson Silva", 6 July 2013, second round.6
Weidman was unbeaten and largely unknown outside the division. Silva spent the first round and a half doing what he had done to nine previous challengers, dropping his hands and inviting the exchange, and then a left hook landed.
Matt Serra beating Georges St-Pierre at UFC 69 is the closest comparison for pure improbability. Holly Holm's head kick on Ronda Rousey and Julianna Peña's submission of Amanda Nunes belong to the same category of night.
What separates the Weidman fight is that the loser had never been beaten in the promotion. Nine of the twelve entries on this list ended a run. This one ended the longest.

## Greg Oden, Ronda Rousey and the shape of a fall
This is the ranking where doing well is the wrong outcome. Eleven athletes qualify, and the qualification is the size of the drop.
Silva's numbers make the case without commentary. He went 16 fights unbeaten in the UFC and then lost seven of his last nine, finishing with a fourth-round stoppage by Uriah Hall on Halloween 2020 and a release from the promotion.8
Greg Oden went first in the 2007 draft, one pick before Kevin Durant, and managed 105 NBA games. Ronda Rousey lost her aura across two fights and thirteen months. Fernando Torres cost Chelsea a British record fee and scored 20 league goals in three and a half years.
The honest reading is that the list needs a great fighter to work. Nobody builds a steepest-falls ranking out of ordinary careers, which is why every name on it is a name.

## UFC 168: on the card, not on the poster
The last ranking holds him without using his name. Twelve UFC events qualify as the greatest the promotion has run, and one of them is UFC 168 on 28 December 2013.
That was the Weidman rematch, five months after the first fight. It ended in the second round when Silva threw a left kick, Weidman checked it, and Silva's shin broke on impact.6
The rest of the card is why the event makes a greatest-events list at all: Ronda Rousey defended her title against Miesha Tate on the same night, and 12,000 people in Las Vegas watched two championship fights end badly for the favourite.
UFC 100, UFC 229 and UFC 300 are the other entries with a serious claim, each of them remembered for a headline fight that went the way the promotion wanted. UFC 168 is remembered for an injury.
Being on a list as a card number rather than a fighter is the least flattering way to appear in an article about your own career. It is also the most accurate, because the event outgrew the man in the main event the moment his leg gave way.

## Sixteen rankings, one career, no agreement
Silva is on the greatest-ever list and the steepest-falls list, and both entries are built from the same six years. That is unusual even in a sport that eats its champions: the reign was long enough to be a record and the collapse was public enough to be a category.
His life story reached Paramount+ in March 2026 as an International Emmy nominee, and last week he was teaching grappling to police officers at a use-of-force conference in California.9 The career is closed, which means these lists are now arguing about a finished thing.
